20 Vartarg Questions

Beings this thread got a second wind, I will update my situation.

I bought a Cooper model 21 20VT. Took a while to get dies, bullets and brass. Hardest thing to find was the H4198 powder this caliber likes so well. I developed a load based on the Hornady 32 grain Zmax bullet. 500 bullets for $60 was a bargain I can get used to.

Just got back from a sage rat shoot. I only had 100 rounds of 20 VT, but it was clearly my favorite rifle to shoot. Longest documented shot with a range finder was 350 yards. I was hoping to see all my hits through the scope, but even with this light recoiling rifle that was not the case. I had a bi-pod mounted and the rifle/scope combo alone weighs right at 10 lbs. Is there a trick to holding the rifle so that you can see all your hits?

I pretty much abandoned my 17 HMR. The wind was getting the best of it beyond 100 yards, and the shots short of that were too easy. Seemed unfair to the rats. I had a couple .223s and shot quite a few rats with them, but I'm pretty sure one of them will be sold and another 20VT will take its place.

As for the rats...it was an epic trip. In two days of shooting I went through just over 500 rounds, and I was taking it easy on them. At one point I scanned my field, about 1500 yards by 400 yards, and I counted over 125 sage rats within shooting distance. Toward the end I grew soft and would only shoot the big ones beyond 150 yards that I assumed were males. Gotta preserve the stock for next year.

ok guys, no idea of barrel life nobody? The spreadsheet formula gives me only 2150 shots, more than a 222 (+ - 2000)???, which has a looong barrel life. Cheers

i read (i wish i could find it :-[) but 3 guys had 3000 shots with more to go, and 1 guy had over 5000 shots and his bore was real good. all from the 20 vartarg.

I've got just over 2,300 rounds downrange from my Cooper 20VT, and the last time I put it on paper with RL-7 and the 32gr NVT, it shot a .197" group.

Out of all my CF varmint rifles, this one, along with my Hornet-based calibers are by far the most easy on barrels. :)

Otter,
You might consider contacting Todd Kindler about the .20 VarTarg as I believe he was the guy who developed the cartridge. Probably has a wealth of information on it. Woodchuck Den--don't have phone # handy but there is a web site.

Old post I know but I'm still amazed that this cartridge has not been SAAMI legitimized yet AND on that note that CZ still hasn't released it in a 527. It's a chicken or the egg scenario.
I.E. When I spoke with CZ on several occasions several years back, they said they wouldn't until it was SAAMI approved. {sigh}
