20 Vartarg .150 Short

PDn at 100-200 with 32 Vmax.

I like to wildcat and want a modern 14-15g cartridge similar to KHornet capacity that will take high pressure.

I now use a vanilla 20 VT with 40 Max @100-250 and a 222 with 50 TNTs thereafter and a 223 with 40s thrown into the mix occasionally.

Hoping 32 Vmax at 14-15 g will get to 3400-3500 in Shorty and get about 75-100 more rounds per pound of powder.

Some of us just can't leave things alone LOL

And WE spend HOURS trying to get what we want, only to find out, SOMEONE HAS ALREADY DONE IT. But, we would have wasted our time on something else, so why not. ;)
Was looking for a reloadable round maybe = to a 22 Mag.
Tried the 20 VT "short". Brass was a bugger to make and never did like the finished product. Stumbled onto the 22 TCM. New brass is beautiful and easy to work with. Necked it down to 20, had custom reamer made. Custom dies made by Whidden Gun Works.
Couple of other folks got my specs and have gotten further that I have. Just not that much of a priority as it used to be. ;)

I don't think going another .150 short on the LC brass will be a problem in a Dillon 1500 trim die I will make from a Lee 221 FB FL die..... but we shall see when my dies finally arrive. They are ordered but not yet shipped from Amazon.

The only failures I have now are in the VT step when there is a slight dent in the LC brass that causes a crease in the neck. However there are so few of them, about 2%, that it's not worth the effort to sort the dented ones out.

Definitely some interesting ideas. I shoot a 20VT and 20 Practical for prairie dogs. To this day I have never had one prairie dog ask me what cartridge I was using! Although, there are thousands who can no longer ask.

View attachment 1593780Ideal has crossed my mind as well.. and went ahead made a case -
Best I can come up with is
16gr capacity-@ .200” short

New reamer & resize needed to work-
Newlon dies for sizing & seating
That looks just lovely! I may play in GRT with that and see what powders work. That’s what Ive learned to watch out for: there are very real gaps in powder burn rates that can make specific case capacities less performant than they should be.

I was looking for efficiency.. 16gr- 32 gr bullet @ 3600fps…

My 17 FB dies and carbide neck reamer arrive tomorrow so should be case forming Shorty soon.

Ordered on Amazon 9/27....finally shipped on Monday, 10/7.....oh well, I've got the rest of my life.

I may try to make Shorty a no turn on Lake City brass.

I have a .238 necking reamer from Dave Manson I've never used. It has a stop incorporated into the design so appears to be an easy step in chambering process to convert from .232.

Shorty would be a good trial run for no turn and the necking reamer.

My advise is to stay away from .17 thick necks, there nothing but trouble.
I found this out on my first time with a no turn 6.5x300wsm nothing but in consistent everytime I shot it, had my reamer regrouped to .014 necks and HUGE difference shots lights out evertime now.

Thanks for the advice.

VT necks from LC are .014-.015+ before turning...I'll have to see where they end up at .150 short.

Sure would like to avoid turning 1000+ if possible.

Personally I like .012 maybe touch more on my VT stuff, its what I turn all mine to that I make out of LC223 brass

It'll be in a blueprinted .223 Rem 700, single shot with custom ramp to fit the brass and no ejector.

Feeding and extraction should not be an issue in the single shot with no ejector.

My 20 VTs in a .223 Rem 700 action have not been as issue when setup as such. Mine will even eject cases IIRC. However I choose to simply pick the case off the extractor manually.

It will be strictly a colony PD exterminator.

You are actually kinda making a mountain out of a mole hill here. Look at the 22 Spitfire/5.7 Johnson cartridge which is made from 30 M1 Carbine brass, which has a rim diameter very close to the Hornet. There are the Calhoon and Garin versions, too. I easily get 3350 fps with 40 gr bullets. Like this cartridge so much that I now have 4 rifles in it and have moved away from Hornets. Graf and Sons usually has brass and dies, and I got my reamer from JGS.

Yes I agree the 30 carbine case is a very good alternative and I know I'm duplicating what others have already done to 5.56 brass over on now defunct Sabier.

I did consider the carbine brass and reviewed the Garin and Calhoun cartridges. However that involves a new bolt, new reamer, new 1500 Dillon trim die and brass is more expensive.....but maybe someday.

This is a low budget experiment on 5.56 brass to achieve 14-15g K Hornet performance just because I can and I like to wildcat.

You said that you had a Ruger 77 in K-Hornet so the Carbine based cartridges would be a drop-in, no?
