20 VarTag brass

I am just starting with the 20 VarTag and need some information. Has anyone used the Sleeping Giant brass? Is it ready to load or do you need to turn the necks? Are there other sources of brass that I should check on?

Never heard of sleeping giant.

I use lapua 221 fireball brass and run it through a vartarg die.

I'm pretty sure you have to turn the necks.

You'll have to turn the necks with the Sleeping Giant brass if you have the typical .232" Vartarg neck size. According to their web site the necks are .015" thick. 2 x .015"+.204"=.234" I had to turn the Lapua brass also for my Vartrag. There is some Remington 221 brass for sale in the classifieds.

Wasn't into turning necks. Did some checking and found that NEW Remington .221 Fireball brass reformed into Vartag came out pretty even. Ordered up a custom 20 VT reamer with a ".234" neck. No more neck turning.
Fired .221 Fireball brass was "all over the place" and needed neck turning.
Finally figured out that neck turning wasn't as bad as I had made out to be. Still don't care that much for the process but I can live with it if needed.
When playing with wildcats, it's usually a must.
Still prefer my .221 Fireball over the 20 VT.

In the description I wrote the neck thickness was .015 because there were some that measured that thickness. I had bullberry barrel works custom cut me a chamber gauge that measures .232 which is what they normally ream their 20 vartarg barrels to. In my years of doing this I’ve learned that brass doesn’t always “flow” the same From piece to piece when reforming cases. As you may have seen from the pics they fit but it’s always best to assume you may have to “clean up” the necks somewhat. I shoot both a 17 (.223 action) and 221 fireball in a cz and no neck turning is done, except for a little clean up. I’ve had customer feedback that it isn’t required in the Remingtons as well. Thank you.

I shoot a 17 FB formed from 223. I turn the necks only to clean them up. Not hard to do.

I found the 221FB, 17M4 and 20VT brass box panacea.....the Berry's Box No. 005 for 223 Rem.



These boxes allow you to pick out fired brass from the box. The usual boxes "hide" the little FB case below the rim so you can't finger grab them. These boxes are perfect for the FB case.



I got rid of all my MTM and other plastic boxes, as the other benefit of this box is that the lid is hinged so it lays flat when open. On the bench when shooting rats, it always irritated me that the MTM box lids would not stay open so grabbing the next rat killing round was always problematic. Problem solved with these boxes.

+1 on Rick's suggestion "Berry's Box No. 005 for 223 Rem" however I find this box a tiny bit too tall for my 20 VT reloads so I glue a piece of foam rubber about .6" thick to the top of the lid. That way the loaded shells DO NOT jostle around and the empties don't bounce around and make lots of noise.
