20 SCC Build

Started this project roughly 5 years ago....finally getting around to doing some load development. This is one of my barrel block builds, welded the stock up myself. This is for colony varmints, bench use only, I tried to get it to 30 pounds. I will have to weigh it now that I have the scope mounted.

Since I'm using a Savage action, I went with an " industrial " look, had a local guy powder coat it in IH colors, (I have a another barrel block build in JD colors). Ergonomics turned out pretty well, I could use a tad larger dimension between the trigger and grip, but it's very doable. I place my offhand on the stock cheek piece, or lack thereof and eye height is perfect.

The 20 SCC is a improved version of the 20VT essentially. I started with A2200, but didn't get great results with the suppressor on...went back to the brake and H4198 and it did better.

Nosler 221FB brass necked down to 204 with a 32gr Nolser Varmageddon, wet moly bullets of course.

Time constraints, as per unusual...trying to shoot in between rain showers, so didn't get the chrono out. Running 18.4gr for all bullet/primer configurations for now, I will retest once I've fireformed them all. Trying to get this rifle ready for an upcoming PD trip.

CCI 400's did pretty good. Some decent IA wind, so I'm not being too hard-nosed about the results, informational more really..

When I went back down to the reloading room, the scale was reading 18.4, I mistakenly wrote 18.3, you can blame the Harrel Bros, lol

You can see the 40 deg shoulder, pretty cool looking case. One of the big reasons for it, I'm hoping to be able to use a Neck Collet die for a few reloading before running these back through the Whidden's..we'll see.

A calm day and some tweaking would probably tighten these up into some good internet worthy groups, but I'm happy with it so far, will load a few hundred and call it good for fireforming!

You will love the 20 SCC. Mine is working really, really well, accurate, fast and deadly on small critters. But mine loves AA2200 and the 32 Nosler lead free pills.

My 20-221AI is similar. I ended up using 18.8 gr H4198 behind 32vmax. Did a ladder test at 250Y in .1gr increments and 18.7, 18.8, and 18.9 went into .3". The whole ladder of 12 shots went sub 1.5".

Honestly I have no interest in pursuing any other medium range varmint cartridge because this one does so much with so little. With only a 21" barrel I'm getting 3750 fps in the summer.

In Rem brass my bolt began to stick at 19.1gr.

I'm curious to see what fps, and load, you end up with, in formed brass!

I will have to let you guys know what the formed brass load will be, I will continue to FF with the 18.4 of H4198, since it's working for me now. I have noticed these barrel block rifles aren't quite as picky with velocity nodes, but they still have a preference. I will be putting a tuner on my next one, in front of the suppressor hopefully.

Thanks for that info Steve, helps a lot. Yes this case is perfect size for the 32gr bullets, IMO.

One thing, I think, you will find with the 20 SCC, as most of us have. Is that your accuracy load will also make your best forming load.
