20 Pup or 20 PPC - .185 info

Since I am a glutton for punishment I have been thninking of putting together a 20 PUP (Kindlers 20PPC .185 short)....was wondering if anyone had any experience with this cartridge....looking for all the help I can get....thanks in advance Ken

You may want to consider looking at the 220 Beggs. Gene Beggs has done a lot of work on the 220 Russian case and has changed the radius at the neck and shoulder, he did this to stop excessive case stretch in the original 220 design. Several guys have taken his design and necked down to 20 cal. and have tremendous performance with very little case prep.
Go to benchrest.com and on the menu you will see general discussion, benchrest only, benchrest, gunsmithing, go in to benchrest and look for Gene's post lastweek of "What's happening with the Beggs cartridges", interesting read for anyone.
I have a 20-220 Beggs reamer(no turn neck) from Dave Kiff and just haven't decided who to get to chamber my Bartlien barrel. I talked to Gene over the phone and bought one of his seating dies which he had made by Hornady, he is very free with his time and information, he told me to get in touch with Arnold Jewell(Jewell Triggers) and I talked with Arnold and he said the 20-220 Beggs is one of the best performing and pleasant cartridges to shoot that he has ever fooled with.
Hope this helps Mack

MY FRIEND BUILT .150 SHORT 20 PPC. HE SAYS IT SHOOTS GREAT BUT MAKING THE BRASS IS NOT WORTH IT. HE AND I
ARE WANTING TO BUILD THE 20 BEGGS.WE WOULD HAVE LAPULA 220 RUSSIAN BRASS RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. WE WERE INTENDING TO NECK IT DOWN TO 20 CAL. AND TURN THE NECKS A LITTLE. YOU WOULD NEED THE PPC BOLT FACE FOR THE 20 BEGGS.

I have a 20 Beggs reamer based on Arnold jewels dimensions. Just waiting on my gunsmith to do the chambering. I used to have a .150" short 20 PPC and i think the 20 Beggs will compete with it using about the same amount of powder.

I am not real sure why everyone thinks making short ppc cases is a pain in the neck. I think it is super simple. A quick run up inside of a cut off 22-250 and your done other than turning the necks. I dont think it could be any simpler. And if you use lapua brass 100 pieces will last at the very least half the barrel life, and probably even longer. I really like the short ppc cases myself. Maybe a 20ppc .125 short is in my near future. What i want to figure out is how to shrink a BR case. Lee

Lee I did a -.195" 20 BR short. The beauty of the beggs is virtually no change from brass to fire formed case . I like the ppc shoulder angle better though.

How about a 6.8 SPC necked down to 20? I know thats a lot of neckin down. I did one for a keychain and seated a 50gr Berger to mag length and the base of the bullet was at the neck shoulder junction. Looks like it could be a hot little round!

My friend did a 20-6.8 ackley improved 40 degree shoulder that he calls the Bad Boy to be used for prairie dogs. I think the name fits. Very accurate using 39 gr. Sierras. I would say somewhere around .3 moa @ 4000+ fps. An easier way to go would be Roy Winnets 20 pdk. It is essentially the same as my friends Bad Boy, the major difference being the 30 degree shoulder. You can get everything you need from him I believe. The brass that he gets from Silver State Armory is already formed, and with small rifle pockets. It also happens to be very nice brass as well.
