20 practical rem 700

I have had a lot of people asking me about the 20 practical so I decided to build one I found a nice tight ss remington 700 sa I blueprinted it wich didn't take much work it was actually close to perfect wich is rare I ordered a shillen select match .20 barrel and a ptg practical 20 finish reamer and some lapua .223 brass I finished the project last week the chamber was great thanks to the perfect ptg reamer my starting loads were 32gr hornandy with 27.6gn bl-c2 first 6 shots out of the gun I new it was going to be good it shot a .312 group @100yrds went and loaded up 6 new shells 27.8gn shot a group .108 was impressed no high pressure signs at all so I loaded 6 at 28gn shot a .089 group still not too hot so 28.2 I went grouped .063 I decided it was time to shoot farther 200yrds loaded up 6@28.2, 6@28.1,6@28.25,6@28.27 time to shoot
200 yrds 1.2mph wind in my face
28.1=.160
28.2=.125
28.25=.122
28.27 =.192 Hot primer was flatened and lost accuracy
these loads were all full sized never fired over all I am very impressed with this wildcat my dies are redding compitition .223 converted over by bushings
any questions please ask

What type of reloading scale are you using that measures accurately between 28.25 and 28.27? Appreciate the info on the 20 practical.

Mid ones at 200 yards????????? a .150 group at 200 yards is a
.75 group at a thousand yards....either god is shooting this rifle or it's getting a little deep if you know what I mean....I have had
clients talk this magic but when they got here to shoot, they shot like a monkey _______ a football and blamed everything under the sun for the malfunctioning equipment.... I guess it's
weighing powder to the 1/1000 th of a grain that makes this
shoot so well.....I'll buy a ATOMIC scale and try it.....Thanks for the entertaining information ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

OHAUS LAB scale it is graduated but .01 grains and sharps thanks for the critisism it makes me ever more proud of my gun building skills as for .75 at 1000 my 6ppc will do a .105 @ 200 but the best at 1000 I have ever shot was 8.25 there are much more changing variables when shooting 1000

hope this helps you this is the best scale I have ever used and being digital is amazing if some time I am going to upgrade to one that goes high enough for me to weigh bigger cases

20 Practical problem....

Building a 20 practical. (Savage/ Shilen barrel ) I want to buy Lee collet dies, because I have had more success with them than any brand...been loading since 1974.

But, the problem is...Lee needs 2 fired cases.
I do not have fired cases. I do have the barrel and action though.

My first thought was to pour a sulfur casting and send to Lee.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

I too would like to know your velocities. What length barrel and twist rate?

Thats some kinda shooting!! My little Cotender I shoot in 20Tac is one heck of a shooter but not those kinda numbers

Pac Nor 12 twist 3 groove...

Savage s/shot....

moly 40 V max @ 3900 fps....

25.5" tube....

recycled 204R bbl.....

This thread is worthless without pics! ;)

That is some amazing shooting.

I have never seen or heard of a rifle shooting zeros with shots 12-18 on a new barrel with no real load development and the first bullet/powder combo on FL sized brass, so you must have a real hummer barrel on your hands. You definitely need to try some 100yd BR with it. Maybe it's time for the .20 practical to knock the 6PPC from it's throne.

What are the other components of this rifle? I would love to know the stock, trigger, barrel length and twist, type of crown and rests you are using. Also what type of primers are you using? Always curious as to what goes into an accurate rifle.

the barrel is a shilen select match 1-12 25" long
stock h-s with grace adjustable butt i machined some billet aluminum bag followers
speedlock firing pin shilen 2.2oz comp trigger
remington 700 action night force rings and base burris xtr-624 scope
lapua 223 brass reamed flash holes deburred and neck turned
sierra 39gr. hbn coated cci br-4 primers 25.95gr 8208 3795fps bullets seated .002 of lands
as for the comment of shooting so well so soon i probably wouldn't have bought it if someone tried to tell me the did it. It is the first gun that has shot under .100 before it even had 100 rounds through it. just last week i shot a .275 group at 300yrds with 1mph wind take it for what its worth

I didn't mean to sound like the rifle won't shoot that well or I don't believe you. It's just almost unheard of for a rifle to come out of the gate printing .1's with 20 rounds of load development. It is pretty amazing, and if you had a few target pictures you would have some serious bragging rights! So........... let's see some targets!
