20 Practical Dies - Hornady FL Match Bushing Set

I don't know about other die manufacturers but on my Redding 17 Hornet bushing neck size only die I unscrew and remove the sizing button from the stem but leave the decapping pin in place and use it like that. It's a tight enough fit the pin doesn't fall out.

I'm not really much of a Lee Precision fan but their decapping die is very inexpensive, I bought mine on Amazon for $10.50, and it works well. The decapping pin that comes with the die only works on 22 cal and larger but Lee sells a 17-20 caliber replacement pin for that die and it only cost 4 bucks. Makes for a pretty inexpensive decapping setup.

This is ordered and headed my way.

I know the topic of forming 20Practical brass has been beat to death on here but I only ever see people suggesting Redding Type S FL dies. Hornady offers 223Rem Match Grade bushing type full length sizing dies and I'm curious if these would also work for sizing 223 brass to 20 practical with the appropriate bushings.

I assume they would work but have never seen them mentioned. List price is usually less than 95$ and that comes with a micrometer seater. I use them for my 6br and really enjoy the set and would consider buying a 233rem(#544207) set for an upcoming 20P project if someone can validate this assumption.

Thanks

Update: These dies will work for sizing brass but you will not be able to use the decapping/expander ball spindle in them. The 20cal expander ball hornady makes will not fit the match grade decapping spindle. The 17/20 cal zip spindle hornady offers is not designed for the match grade dies. You will need to deprime fired brass with a lee universal decapping die and their 17/20 guide rod.
The 17/20 zip spindle will work if you modify it on lathe. Turn outside diameter down and cut c-clip slots in high and low positions like the 223 version. You still need the expander ball.

Thats what I use, too. I have mine mounted in a cheap Lee C frame press on the end of my bench just for decapping with a trash can under it to catch spent primers.

I haven't seen anyone mention it, so I will. One great reason to use a bushing die is because the very best accuracy is obtained in the 20P when the necks are turned to rid the uneven thickness of the neck which occurs when taking the neck down to .20 caliber. The smaller the caliber, the more pronounced the effects is on accuracy by turning the neck. Once necks are turned, it is easy to accomplish the desired neck tension on your brass. I use, for example, different bushing when loading 32 V-Max as opposed to a slightly larger one for 40 V-Max or 39 Blitz King. And I am shooting these out of an A/R.
