20 P build help

I'm trying to put together a 20Practical AR that can utilize an upper with a non reciprocating side charging handle (like Gibbz or American Spirit). I would be open to getting a complete upper, or individual parts and the name of a good gunsmith to put it together. I'd appreciate any leads for the complete upper and/or who makes a good quality barrel in this size (probably prefer a 1:10 twist, 24" w/5/8 x24 threads in a medium contour). Thanks for any help.

I would look to Hart Barrels. I like the Krieger 26" heavy barrel "Varmatch" barrel for .223 so much, I had Hart Duplicate the dimensions for my .20 Practical. When I did that first .20 Practical, hart did not chamber in that caliber - but they do now - and I have ordered another - this time not having to send it out for chambering. Very high quality barrel as seen through my borescope - and I am used to looking at Kriegers, Bartleins, Shilens, etc. . I can't help much on the side-charging handle.

I built a 20 TAC (just a 20 Practical with a 30 degree shoulder) with a 1" bull barrel and .936" gas block at 20" total length. Went with a 3 groove 1 in 11" twist. I just pulled my 5.56 barrel, bought the bigger gas block, rifle length gas tube, and rifle length free floating hand guard. Pretty easy to put together. Plenty of youtube videos if you need some guidance. Really no need to pay a smith to put it together. Just order a drop in AR barrel how you want it from whichever manufacturer that will make them in 20 cal and install it. A 1 in 10" twist may limit you on manufacturers. A 1 in 11" or 1 in 12" twist is much more common and most manufacturers can build with those twists

Basically, the top 3 AR smiths are John Holliger at White Oak (also offers 20P barrels), John Scandale at Keystone Precision, and Frank at Compass Lake.

I have a BHW 24" spr profile 3p barrel on my 20P upper and it shoots great. The 20P recoil is so mild that even a moderately heavy gun around 10# allows you to see your hits through the scope!
