20 or 22BR???

im rather new to the rifle shooting world and through reading the vast wealth of imformation to be had on this website and ive gotten my mind set on a necked down 6br case what im wondering is for general varmint hunting, octional pd hunt mostly coyote hunting)with shots out to the 600yrd line what would be your choice between the 20br or the 22br

thanks
Nathan

I have a 20br witha 10 twist that shoots the 39 grain Sierra blitzking at 4000fps. I use it to shoot hogs, it destroys them. Mine is very accurate, I have shot some 5 shot 2.5 inch groups at 500 yards with it. If you want to shoot coyotes with it I porbably would recommend shooting the 50 grain berger to give you a little more energy for the long shots. If you want to shoot out around 600 yards you may be better off shooting a 22 br because there is larger bullet selection, with heavier weights and better BC's with those heavier bullets.

just my two cents...I would personally take the 20 over the 22.

It's just me thinking again, but the 22BR will sure give you more punch on Coyotes out a far piece than the 20 will... if it was going to be just PD's then the 20 would do you fine..

If you are that new to the rifle shooting world, don't forget that you will not only have to reload your own ammunition but both versions will have to be reformed from the 6mm BR case.
Do you have much experience in this?

i load a little for my 223 ar and my 280rem for deer hunting so i know the basics of reloading ive gotten my stock dpms ar to shoot .5moa at 200 with my hand loads and i would like to learn more about reloading and get better at it so i figured one or the other would alos be a fun undertaking help me learn more about reloading and shooting in general

I have the .22 BR Remington cartridge. Unfortunately I have noticed lately that Internet retailers that used to carry the 6mm BR Remington case no longer list it in Remington brand cases. Fortunately when I did buy some I bought about a thousand cases to use for the .22 and 6mm BR Remington cartridges so I should be supplied for sometime to come!:)

At the distances you're taking about, I'd choose the .20 BR hands-down.

The .22 calibers certainly have a great bullet selection compared to the .20 cals. However when you combine the .295 BC of a 50 grain Berger with a 3600 fps muzzle velocity, the .22's can't keep up. A .22 bullet with comparable BC is the Berger 62 grainer. There's no way to safely push a 62 grain .22 bullet to 3600 fps with a BR case. It's all about time of flight.

7STW,

With you saying mostly for 'yotes I would keep it as a 6mmbr.

My 6mmbr is my go-to dog gun.

Killed piles with my 22-250, but since I switched to the 6mmbr,75 grain Vmax) I get fewer runners than I did with 55 grain bullets out of my 22-250?

Not too scientific, but I really have had more "dead right there" coyoyes with the heavier, slower bullet.

I'd worry about 600 yards shots with a .20 cal. at coyotes, if you hit'em you will be tracking lots of them!

thanks guys for all the info keep it coming

andy i have thought about that 6br but i like things that are just a little bit different and the thought has crossed my mind about maybe trying one of the improved 6br versions in 22. and there are also some pretty good heavy hunting bullets like the 70gr. barnes tsx and it could easly be loaded with some of the smaller V-max for a p-dog hunt with ease

with the topic of an improved 6br in 22 what kind of numbers are you guys getting out of some of those cases

Nathan

I have a 22BR with a tight neck chamber. The rifle was made by Smitty,SG&Y) 20 years ago. It shoots in the .2s & .3s with a few groups in the upper.1s with most 52 gr. bullets.,1:14 twist) It does a super job on coyotes out to 425 yds. I have not used it for longer shoots. If I had it to do over I would not chamber for the tight neck since it requires more work to prep the cases. I would chamber it for cleaned up necks if you plan to use Rem. brass because they need truing up or better yet shoot only Lapua brass which is good enough to shoot as is for varmint hunting. Barrel life may be better on the 22BR than the 20BR. I do not know since I've not owned one. The 20BR sounds like a fun caliber.
