20 MOA scope base for NXS

I have been looking over my equipment for this years varmint hunt and I was just thinking about my scope base.

I have a Barnard action and I purchased the scope base from Mac Tilton for the action. It has 20 MOA built into it. My NXS 5-22x56 is now well off optical center for a 200 yard zero.

I was thinking this might be bad idea because I am not close to the optical center and I do not think I will ever need the 70 MOA of elevation adjustment I have. I really don't like to tinker with something that is working but I was wondering if I would make some optical gains, noticeable gains) if I got rid of the 20 MOA base?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Vegata,
What caliber is your Barnard in? How do you like your Barnard, they really look good. I decided in mid October to buy a new action, either a Barnard or a BAT. I am still waiting on the BAT, over five months. I could have had the Barnard in five days...Big mistake..

I have 20 minute bases on several rigs even though I don't need them for the caliber that I am shooting. I don't think being a little off optical center is that big of deal, Mostly I subscribe to your philosophy "If it ain't broke don't fix it"

What distance are you going to be shooting at the most? For 200 yards a 20 minute base is unnecessary but its paid for so I would use it.

On getting a BAT or Barnard-never had a Barnard but have several BATs and don't want anything else. The demand is causing the delay on them, that tells me something.

I dont see a problem w/that setup at all. I have a 8-32x56 NSX on my 260 Nesika w/20 moa base. I have no problem w/my zero @100 yds.The reason for the base is that you dont run out @1000 yds or so. As long as you can reach a zero who cares. If it works why change it? I probably didnt need it on my rifle either but it doesnt hurt. Those scopes have such a wide adj range even w/o a 20 moa base.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have to agree that if it isn't broke don't fix it. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing something important.

I am shooting at 50 yards to infinity at prairie dogs but I am a newbie to long range shooting so I really can't make reliable hits past 300. Last year was my first season so I have some new things to try out this year to hopefully get me out to 500 or 600. Even with that I am still only going to use less than 20 MOA.

My gun is a 6mmBR in a Mastin offset stock. I got the idea off of this site. My gun looks almost identical to the 6mmBRX Barnard/Mastin combo in the early guns of the week. Mine has a heavier barrel.

I have to say that I am quite satisfied with the Barnard. It is not the action I wanted to get, I wanted to get a BAT ) but the Barnard is matched with the Mastin stock and uses the alluminum V-block. This simplified getting the gun together.
