20 MOA base

OK here goes stupid me. What does the above do as opposed to regular base? what advantage. I am not a target shooter. Thanks don't think bad of me because I am so good looking LOL. Lou

ourway77: Don't feel bad. I personnally do not believe there is anyone, anywhere who "knows it all". Many times when wanting to shoot at longer distance's, beyond 5 or 600 yards, you may run out of "up" clicks of elevation, because of the built-in limitations of the scope, the scope/rifle combination, the ammo you're using, etc. One of the ways to fix this problem is to use a base mount that has a taper machined into it so the front heighth is lower than the rear. That degree of taper, in your question is 20 degrees. Tapered base's are available in other degrees of taper also. Since you are gaining "up" clicks with the tapered base, there are more remaining in the scope to be used for sight-in. Hope I'm making at least a little sense here. If not don't hesitate to come right back. ;)

The advantage is more elevation in your scope. Were a standard base is flat a 20 moa base is 20 moa higher in the back than the front pointing your scope down in the front to lower the point of impact in turn giving you more elevation. They also make 10moa and 15moa. You can go as far as a 20 moa base and the burris zee rings with the inserts to upwards of 40 moa to help with long range shooting. Hope this helps you out.

Thank you Gentleman that clears it up, I had an inkling what it was for. Now that I know I really don't think a regular base will be any problem, as most of my shots are under 500 yards Max. Respectfully. Lou

i don't shoot over 600 with my ar and have a 20 moa base on it ... ok i've thrown some lead out further at coyotes but.... in fact i put some picitiny short blocks under that..... i hate having to schooch my neck and head down to look thru a scope and an ar is probably the worst for that....the base really helps if your shooting a mil dot and use it for ranging and dialing poi.

The 20 MOA stands for Minute Of Angle. There are 60 Minutes in each Degree and 360 Degrees in a circle. One Minute is slightly greater than 1" at 100 yards, and being an angle it increases to 2" at 200 and 3" at 300.
