20 caliber Cartridges

I just love the 20 caliber stuff so much. I have at the moment a 20 Vartarg with Lilja 12 twist barrel and a 20 PPC Hart 9 twist tube. Both rifles shoot extremely well. the ppc i have fired groups in the .2 and .3 at 200yds. I really have got the 20 bug bad. I have had 20 vartargs and a 20 tac in the past and even shoot a 20 BR one summer. They are all great little varmint and target rounds that will satisfy the most demanding shooter!!!

Yes I think this 20 caliber bug is a fever! I was going through back surgery and rehab when the 204 came out so I kind of missed the boat at first. About 3 years ago I decided that I need to get aboard the boat, I found a 20/223AI reamer on the specials page on the PTG sight, rounded up a used 204 Remington barrel, and inexpensive Savage Axis, in a half day of shop work I had my first 20. The first time at the range I was amazed, this thing tried to put all the bullets in the same hole. From that point forward I wend 20 crazy, I have 4, 204's, 20 Vartarg, 2, 20 Ackley Bee's, 20 Hornet, 204 Donaldson Wasp, 20 BR, 20 SCC, 20/357 Max. and as I type I have a 9 twist PacNor barrel in the lathe that Im chambering in 5/35 SMC. Holy Cow! I just realized I have better than a dozen 20's. Man I hate to have an odd number, I better think of another one or 3 or 5.......

Its more like a plaque than a bug. I just cant go without building or buy something in 20 cal. But by far my favorite is the 20vt since you can shoot all day in pd fields without burning out the barrel.

The 20's have pretty much taken over all my varmint shooting currently have a 20VT 204R 20br and a 20-250

Same thing here.....four 204's and a 20VT have pretty much stolen the show from all my .17 and .22 cal rifles, with the 20VT being my sweetie caliber. Once you go there, you're hooked! :)

I have kicked around the idea of a 20-222 rem but, just haven't done it yet. I think it would be one hell of an accurate cartridge? Started out with a 22-250 then went to a .243 win and now I have a 25-06 in the works. I keep going bigger in bullet diameter instead of smaller for some reason?

Yep I love my VT killed more chucks with it and the 20-250 last year than anything, but I really have the hots for a 20-222 now I don't know why it's not like I really need it

I had Bob Green build me one on a mod 7 with a #3 Rock Creek makes a great walking varmint gun, wish I would have picked up a couple of those aac actions off of gunbroker

RwBeV, I tried both of those powders but couldn't find a load my rifle liked and the 1680 was stretching my primer pockets with even a mild load. Which is odd because the IMR 4227 is a faster powder but my rifle seems to like this powder well enough that I stopped fire forming on paper and started fire forming on critters. 30 shots in 1 inch @ 100. since I only use this round out to 150yds. that's good enough for now.
What velocity are you getting out of the 1680? I'm getting 3400 with a 20g Varmegeddon HP.

oops! That should have been with a 32g Varmegeddon. Sorry for the brain fart

I'm 50 rounds into my Cooper 20 VT and am quite pleased. First 25 rounds were a mild barrel break-in/fire-forming session with the bullets seated pretty deep into the lands. Accuracy was just okay, mostly due to the cleaning session from what I could tell.

Next 25 rounds was testing two powder charges and four seating depths. Clean barrel had vertical and then settled down. As the bullets moved away from jam accuracy improved. A few of the three shot groups were in the low .2s and one was in the .1s. I'm expecting five shot groups consistently in the .3s, if not better.

Recoil is so mild. I think I'm hooked. My biggest reservation about the 20 VT was Remington brass. That has now been cured with Norma, Nosler (Norma sorted) and Lapua all offering parent .221 Fireball brass. Another reservation was the tiny cases and bullets. No worries as my paws have already learned to handle the small cases and bullets. Funny, when I reload for a 30-06 or .270 now, I feel like I'm loading up Howitzer shells.

Not yet. Still waiting for someone to get some in.

I bought 100 Norma brass though and was very impressed. I turned the necks a little and was amazed at how uniform the thickness was. After fire forming I trimmed the necks back and only one of them was more than about .003 off from all the others
