20 cal cleaning rod

My Pro-Shot 20 cal polished steel 20 cal is 0.195.

CZ's are known for the tight bores, a Bore Tech 22 cal rod will fit in my CZ MTR barrel, the BT rods are a bit smaller diameter than the standard cleaning rods. The jag and patch size can make a difference as well.

Go to the Bore Tech's website, it has all the dimensions of their rods.

I purchased their 22 rimfire rod and it was too tight for my Tikka T1X. Their excellent customer service shipped me a 20-caliber rod even before I returned their 22 RF rod.

The 20-caliber rod works terrific in my tight bore Tikka - very high-quality rod.

I recently got a cheap 28" x .160" polished steel rod from Wal-Mart which fits my CZ-455 quite well. That, plus a weed-whacker line is all I use on the CZ.

Nice and cheap….and really bendy, as in flexing right into the rifling all the way down the bore.
Any guess as to how long before that barrel is toast?

I don't believe there is a 20 cal cleaning rod. I use a 17 cal on my 204 ruger. There are 22 cal rods small enougth to fit in your bore. The 17 cal rod that I have has a smaller thread than my 22 cal rods. Again there are 22 cal rods that will fit inside your bore. Try rephrasing the question to "what cleaning rod are you using on your 457 mtr?"

As posted, there are several .22cal rods that will fit the CZ. The .22cal rod sold by PQP is .187od. If the Pro Shot .20cal at .195 fits, should have no problem with the PQP. I will only use 2 different MFG's on rods. PQP (mine are Stiller, PQP are the same) and Bore Tech. Keep in mind the Bore Tech has 2 different .22cal rods. One is CF, and one is RF. Orange handle is RF, green is CF.

I don't know, that cheap 28" rod seems to be as stiff as the 10" longer Dewey .22 caliber rod. In any case it gets used very little, most cleaning being done with the nylon line and patch. It is just one more tool in the arsenal, to be used judiciously.

A little info here concerning 22 caliber rods........ Unless specified as RIMFIRE a 22 caliber rod will be close to .224" in diameter and is for centerfire barrels. Rimfire rods in 22 caliber will be called out as such.

Why would you think that? A 20 cal rod isn't just a rebranded 22 rf. Rimfire rods are approx. .195-.210 if you believe the manufacturers....
Diameters of my rods, all ProShot polished:
17 rod = .1540
20 rod = .1865
22 rod = .2015 ( I guess this will do both CF & RF, although I don't use it in the RFs)

I'm confused as to your statement. Can you clarify?

Thanks

Richard
CZ recently produced a run of barrels for their 457 mtr with a smaller than normal bore diameter. The bore diameter on them is small enough that some brands of 22 cal cleaning rods will not fit in them. Some will some won't.
There are also 20 cal barrels produced by other manufacturers. I own a 20 cal barrel and I use a 17 cal rod to clean it. The thread size to screw the tools into my 17 cal rod is smaller than the thread size on my 22 cal rod.
The op titled the thread 20 cal cleaning rod then said he owned a cz 457.
I like your post better than mine.

CZ makes its .22LR bores to CIP specifications as required by regulations associated with CIP membership. They don't make unique runs with bores that are not in accordance with the rules and regulations of CIP firearms proofing.

I never said they didn't make barrels to cip specks. However, I've seen this situation before recently around cz mtr barrels. I'm sure that their barrels are within the minimum cip specks and no larger. That specification would have been checked when the barrel was proofed. Who proofs cleaning rods and all brands are not the same size.

To make a long story short, a quick check of midwayusa.com shows a Birchwood casey17-20 cal cleaning rod 30 or 36 inches long with an 8-32 thread. The standard thread on 22 cal brushes and jags is 8-32. Hope that helps the op out.
