20 cal. (204)bullet ?

Friend wants to know the best bullet to use on coyotes so he doesn't destroy the pelt.

Good luck with a 204. If concerned about pelts, I'd recommend using a 22 caliber of some sort with FMJs.

BigD, that was my thoughts too. anyway a FMJ, but I don't think they make a 204/fmj bullet. and apparently they have a 204 and not a 22 cal rifle.

Right. No fmj in 204. That's why I said he should get a 22 of some sort

I ran the 32g vmax, 39g sierras, 26g barnes in my 20P on coyotes and never had an exit from 50 yards to 400 on them. All were at 3600-3800 fps also.

Got to agree with 5spd here as I have experienced the same with the plastic tipped varmint bullets in my .204. I will also say that if using a fmj you must put that bullet through BOTH lungs, brain, or heart or there will be a very good chance that you will lose the dog. Years ago I took some kids coyote hunting...all these kids owned was their deer hunting rifles (30-06) so I gave them some 30-06 fmj's to shoot as the hides were worth about 65 to 70 dollars then. I told them at the time that they would have to take out both lungs, heart or head shot to put the yote down. Well the one that was called in and hit...(small blood trail) was chased for at least 5 miles till we gave up. Seen this same thing happen another time and that was the end of fmj's for me. There is nothing but a small entry and exit hole with these bullets so like I said ya got to hit the vitals. I stick with the explosive varmint bullets.

After more than 200 coyotes shot I can attest that the sierra 32gr BK at 4000fps is king for DRT kills and MINIMUM pelt damage from 20 ft to past 400yds.

I second the Barnes Varmint Grenade. Thwey open up reliably close and way out. The only one to exit was shot at 50 feet. Looks like they got hit by lightening. Only downside is if shooting beyond 400 yards as I think they begin to become unstable due to their being larger than a lead bullet. I say that as I shoot a lot of ground squirrels way out there - coyote-sized targets not so much of a problem until around 500 yards. The 39 Blitz King rules for longer distances.

I know the hide's are worth a good amount but just kill as many as possible.I wish there were more coyote hunters in western new york so the deer population would recover.

I use Sierra 32 grain Blitz Kings with good results.
