20 BR Loads For 50 gr Projectiles

I have done a search and have not been able to find exactly what I am looking for.

I am Australia and we have a local Projectile manufacturer that is going to be producing 50 Grainer 20 cal projectiles.

I am looking for starting loads using available powders that we have.AR2208(Varget)Benchmark 8208
(XBR8208)AR2206H (4895) or BM2 (Benchmark)

Just curious, why 50s? The 20s are better suited to 32 to 40 grain bullets. Cut below is from the main site here. Bold are mine. My search came up nil with 50 gr bullets and your powders. Having said all that, Quickload should give you what you are looking for.

WarrenB (Fireball), an avid 20 BR shooter, states “I really love my 20 BR. I have put around 500 rounds through it and my buddy’s bore scope shows no real wear yet at the throat. The nice thing about the 20 BR is that it is so easy to push a 40gr. bullet at 4000 FPS with mild pressures. The recoil from the 20 BR is mild with a heavy rifle using a good bench-type stock. I think the sweet spot for the 20 BR is as a heavy, shoot from the bench, prairie dog rifle shooting 39 or 40gr bullets easily at 4000 fps on a hot day with no pressure worries. It is obviously very accurate as well. In terms of case-forming it is as easy–just buy 6BR brass and neck them down. I am using my existing 6mm and 22 BR dies to do everything. Only a new bushing was required.”

.Thanks Hogpatrol but I have a 20 PPC for the 40`s and a 20 VT for the 32`s.Now I want a slightly larger case for the 50`s.Hence my question on here.

L461, what twist does the projectile manufacturer recommend for his 50's? I have a 10 twist 20 Prac that so far loves the Hornady 45gr SP pushed with either IMR 3031 or IMR 4064...still testing. My next .204 project will be built on a 221 Fireball with a 12 twist to shot the 32's.

For discussion's sake, my opinion would fall into the - "If you can do 69, 77, 80s in .223Rem, sure as heck can do 50s in a 20BR". Plenty of boiler room, twist it right and make it happen. JMO.

I've got Todd Kindlers book and he lists starting charges for the 20 BR with 50g bullets, 1-9 twist, 26" barrel;

Benchmark 27.6g 3451 to max 31.1g 3797
Varget 28.5 3285 to max 33.4 3786

I don't know what the shipping would be to you but his book "Terrific Twenties" is pretty cool and a good resource if you want to mess with the 20 cal stuff.

TK shows 28.5-33.4 grs Varget with F205's and 26" bbl shooting 50 Bergers

TK shows 27.6-31.1 grs Benchmark with CCI450's and 26" bbl shooting 50 Bergers

His loads have a tendency to be hot on the high end so keep this in mind. Also, case capacity, powder lot and bearing surface will also affect this data.

I use 29.3gr of varget with bergers 55gr bullet in my 20br. Todd loads his stuff pretty hot, so don't expect to be able to get the amount of powder he does into the case.

I have Todds Terrific Twenties book and used it as a guide when I started loading my 20 PPC
And yes some of his loads could well be considered hot.
I am getting better speeds,lower ES and better accuracy in that rifle using a slower powder that what was recommended.

If you don't mind sharing, what powder/bullet combos are you using?

I have a 20 BR that worked really well with Benchmark and the 39g Blitzkings and in a trade recently picked up an unused 1-12 20PPC barrel that is set up for a Panda, thinking about screwing it on and giving it a try.

Very nice, though don't overlook giving the 39g Blitzkings a quick try, their BC beats the Hornadys.

I tried the Blitzkings and they shot no better than the Vmax and down here are half the price again.

Can you tell me what speed the Sierra Blitzkings BC is tested at.The 40grn max is tested at 3400 fps so when launched at 4100 fps the BC is much higher

I have a 20BR, and I shoot the 55 grain burgers in it. It has a 26" barrel with a 1:9 twist. I shoot reloader 15 in it, with velocity of 3660. i would love to get my hand on some 50 grain bullets. I wish Walt Berger still made them here in the states.

I had a 20 BR with a 24" Pac-nor 1:10 twist.

I've had 2 x 6Br's and am now playing with a 22BR. Goto powder for them all is AR 2208 (Varget).

In the 20BR 2208 will easily push the 39/40g to 4250 fps with 33g powder and no signs of pressure but accurate load is around 31g at 3950...which you can get out of a 204, but not always on an accuracy node.

My 1:10 twist even shot the 55 Bergers at 3650 very accurately at first (which should need a 1:9 min twist) ... for a while. But at 1200 rounds its started throwing fliers and had fire cracking. I suspect the rougher bore just pushed the 55's over the stability edge.

I shot about 50 rounds of the 39's at 4250 and suspect thats what cooked the barrel

If you getting someone local to make 50g's then they will want to be a high BC or you will be much better off shooting the Berger 55's. I have 500 rounds of the 50g bergers but never tried then as they only have same BC as the 40's and you will loose 200-300fps over the 40's.

If I do another 20Br it will be 1:8 twist zero freebore for the Berger 55g. If your planing to shoot 40'2 better to build a 204 or 20 practical and get 3x barrel life.

Nb just playing with a T3 lite in 204R at moment. 3 shot groups shoot 0.25's consistently, in fact I'd have to say its the more accurate than any of my custom guns!

Have worked up loads with 39g with 2206H which starts to show pressure signs at 3900 and accuracy node around 3700. Just tried CFE223 today and reached 4000 with no signs of pressure, but again accuracy node is clearly closer to 3700.

So maybe the 20BR is still does have a 200 fps edge over the 204 shooting 39/40's

Going hte otehr way... have recenely workd up a load for a 204R with a 1:8 twist barrel shooting the 55g bergers. Accuracy node is around 3200, and pressure signs at 3350, so you giving away 400fps over the 20BR with the heavier projectiles.

I have 2 1-9 twist 20 br. Using reloader 15 I am able to get 3800 plus in 30 in barrel before I show any pressure signs with 55 gr Berger's. Reloader 15 and benchmark is the only powders I found that worked good. But I get better velocities with R15.
