20 BR Likes and Dis likes

Just seeing who has used the 20 BR and would like to share their thought?
i am thinking for my purpose, i would use 40 grn projectiles and a 12 twist,
what free bore would suit the 40 's?

My 20BR was built by GregTannel,it has 0 freebore and shoots all the 39's
and 40's extremely well.Believe it or not it shoots the discontinued 50 Berger very well too.
Of course I'm at 6202' elevation. The 40 Berger shoots like a full blown bench rig.The BlitzKing got my
520yd pd,still had enough energy too kill the dog cleanly. You will love the 20BR.

Get a 1-11 twist to insure it will stabilize all the different 40's, or a 9 or 10 twist if you think you might want to shoot the 50's. Read the 20 call info on this site to get a feel. I am going the route of a 20-223AI next, and think it will come pretty close to the 20BR with 40's. You won't believe how flat these shoot until you get out on a PD shoot. They are major fun!

I loved the 20BR that I had.

Shot the 50 grain Bergers at 3600fps. They were the best coyote killing setup I've ever shot. No fur damage and bang flop dead.

However the gun didn't feed very well in a repeater configuration so I had it rechambered to a 20-250. I gained velocity and now can shoot the 55s at 3700.

This is in a 9 twist rifle.

I could shoot the 40s in the 20 right around 4000. I never tried to push them harder but it shot very well. THe 250 will shoot the 35s over 4200....holy smokes.

I would go zero free bore also, although mine is a 9 twist set up for the 55gr Bergers. I have never tried anything under 45grs but it shoots the Blackhole 45gr plastic tipped bullet over 4000 fps, I think I would go with a 11 twist over the 12 only because I had a 12 twist 204 Ruger that wouldn't stabilize the 40gr Vmax, although your to be moving a bit faster.

I just had one built, sat on the fence for a long time between a 1-9 and 1-11 twist barrel. The lure of the longer range with the 55 Bergers was a pretty attractive but ultimatly decided on the 1-11, reason being I didn't like the idea of building a rifle around one bullet that may or may not be available or even shoot well in my setup (was unaware of the Black Hole bullets). With the 1-11 I can run the 39 Blitzkings, 40 Vmax and 40 Noslers.

The 40g variety fits into my purpose a little better, I'm on the east coast and not many shots are over 600yds so the 39BK works very well for that. I run them a tad over 4k which shoots flat enough (can get them to 4300 but not necessary). The big benefit it that it has a great range for my area and once that little bullet moving at that speed hits something it's coming apart and dosen't run the risk of tumbling half a county away like some of the longer range boomers.

Brass prep was pretty simple, I have an old 22br Wilson FL sizer that I ran new Lapua brass through and then through a bushing die, annealed and fireformed. Lost one case to a neck split.

I have run a 1 in 9 for about 5 years. Its my rifle of choice for anything where I dont have to carry the rifle !!, so truck shooting, ambushes etc. Very heavy, very accurate, .2/.3 with Berger 50s, .4 with 39 SBKs even though the twist is not ideal for them. The 39s tend to be my bullets of choice, explosive on crows, kill foxes cleanly out to 300 yards or so. Tend to use 50s on paper and at small targets a long way out. Fitted neck and I think zero freebore.

Commisioning another today I would go 1 in 11 and stick with the 39SBK, Barrel is a Bartlien, one of the first 20s they made.

Forgot to add dislikes, it's a wee bit of an overbore and thankfully my load development was quick and easy, I wouldn't want to have to spend 100+ rounds to find a load it likes.

Great info which has really helped!
I will stick with the 40's for what i am doing as i shoot a 6 dasher with 65's so that takes care of shots further out.
what can you guys tell me about barrel life, i have had reports of 1100 rounds but was hoping to get closer to 2000 with a 12 twist.
What do you think of he Vmax v's SBK on varmints?
