20 br for bench rest?

Hope you don't mind me taking your thread slightly sideways. We shoot a competition in Australia called the 500m Fly with the 300m version called a Mozzie shoot. I have 1000 55gn bergers sitting on the shelf, a McMillan Hunter br stock and a 9 twist lilja palma profile barrel sitting waiting for the BAT SV action. Plan is for a top quality varmint gun that can dabble for fun in 300m mozzie and maybe 500 fly.

Its going to be a 20 dasher. Where can you recommend sourcing competition quality dies?

Trev, you best bet would be Sinclairs, Grafs or Brunos. Don't waste your time looking for these dies in OZ. I tried looking for 20 Vartarg dies in OZ with no luck, some shops even asked what is a 20 Vartarg. I got them from Sinclairs.

Sinclairs don't list them unfortunately

IF..................someone like Whidden can export, you could send them a reamer print...

Not sure if they are able to send them though.......

I don't think they do, i tried to order through Sinclairs and got a message back saying something like " these dies are sent direct from manufacturer and they don't send overseas" or words to that effect.

If you can get a Wilson die blank you can use the chamber reamer to cut a seating die.

For neck sizing / shoulder bumping a BR or Dasher die with the appropriate bushing should get you started.

I'm about to get back into the 500fly shoots and will build a 6 dasher so this is the way I will go. The gunsmith sells Wilson dies so I'm sure he will be able to get a blank. he has already talked me into an arbor press and inline dies for the full on comp rifle

Thanks for your input everyone

Hey guys good to see this conversation still active! I rebarreled a win model 70 to a 20 br and am shooting the Berger 55s and love it. I hit 3 prairie dogs in a row at 580 yards last summer on a hunting trip in Montana. Now I'm sold on it so I'm pursuing my original idea of a benchrest build based on this caliber. Just got my 30" benchmark barrel in the other day. I will be putting it on a bat action that is currently a 6.5x284 with McMillan tooley mbr stock. I will primarily be using it for 600 yards but might play around with it at 1000. Can't wait to see what the 30" barrel will do. On my 26" barrel I can push the 55s 3725 with reloader 15 before I get any high pressure signs. So maybe I can get close to 3800. When I start testing the rifle I will post reports here and also I'll post my first match results with it.

Well guys finally got my benchrest 20 br built and wow am I impressed so far, but havn't done much shooting out very far with it. My first 5sh group as I was breaking the barrel in was in the mid 2s at 100. Later I loaded up some test loads to check seating depth and that was kinda a waste of time cause I never figured anything out all my groups where between .35 and .38. Today I did a ladder test at 500 yards and the picture of the results is posted. I did have wind from right to left but didn't hold or adjust for any of it was just concerned about my vertical. Shots 5-9 is only .6 inches of vertical. The shots with the x through them where sighters. Looks like in that accuracy node I'm getting about 3775 fps out of my 29 inch barrel. Nice shooting. Whats your load?

Aaron
Shots 5-9 were between 30.8-31.6 gr. of reloader 15, br4 primers, 55gr Berger. This load is gonna be on the hot side, my altitude is 200 ft and was shooting in cold weather.
I also have another 20 br that really likes 31.4 gr. of reloader 15 so this might be a sweet spot. But I load down to 31 gr in the summertime.

I will also be shooting groups at 500 and 1000 yards in the near future I will post results when I get around to doing that.

I might mention also that these groups are unedited I am posting what I shoot and not just picking the best out of four or what ever. My feeling is at this point the gun is very capable of shooting in the low 4 in" groups consistently with the right shooter and reloader. If you notice that each group had 4 shots that measured right at 3". Tonight when I shot these groups I had about a 6mph wind at 10:30. I also wish my es that is 26 fps was a bit better. I'm going to try to tune that out and see if I can't improve on these groups. But I am very happy with these and they met my personal goal but if it wants to do better I'm not gonna limit it.
