Has anyone thought about nicking down the 300bo to a 20 cal?

I suppose some may have but it would just end up being a slightly shorter version of 20-223 or 20 practical.

I have tried to neck the 300bs down, not much luck. Most crush or wrinkle, no matter what tricks I have tried.

Certainly possible, but there will be some neck thickness, concentricity, and donut issues that would all have to be rectified along the way. Multiple annealings too.

Yes, I have done something similar, the 20 viper based off of someone else’s 17 viper. The original intent was not to use 300 BO brass, but it works well for a 1.350 length cartridge. I did turn but for one of the thinner commercial brasses like Federal it may not be necessary. The nice thing about commercial brass is it is already annealed, forming was 3 steps down, 25,22 then 20. L-R 20TCM, 20/30 Carbine, 20 Viper, 20 Vartarg.

I also had better results with 222 and 223 brass. I did have to neck turn with both. Yeah it’s a chore, but I think my end results were worth it to me.

I’m sure 223 and 300bo are way more available but unless you want to shoot volumes, I would go with the 300bo’s real parent brass and use 221fb.

Wouldn't a 20 BLK essentially be the same as a 20-221? Necking down 221FB brass to 20cal would be a hell of a lot easier then necking down 300BLK to 20cal.

It definitely hasn't gotten any easy to find that's for sure.

And then Lapua, in all their wisdom, makes things worse when they decided to discontinue 221 brass. Discontinuing the 221FB brass certainly didn't help things. I think Lapua has stopped making 300BLK brass too.

Maybe a 20-221 Ackley ? Forming 221 from 223 Mil brass is pretty easy with just a 221 Trim die. Neck to 20. Turn the necks and fire form to a 20-221 Ackley.

I'm just throwing that out there.
Me ? I'd go with a 20 Vartag.

Nothing wrong with that. At the time I did what I did, I was shooting the 24 NTX on CA ground squirrels, and I wanted smaller capacity for lower barrel heating. Also, I actually like forming brass

I'm not saying anything wrong with it, ive made probably 1,000 20VT and 20SCC cases, 1000 17 badger cases from 30 carbine.
20 prac is just a simple neck down.
I just got done making 200- 17 MachIV cases for a relative too.
