20-250 IMP

Anyone out there got one? I am haveing one built with a 1 in 9 twist barrel. Looking for any load data. I have the 20-250 and know i can start there but, im impatient so any help would be awesome. Also any one know of a bonded bullet for the 20 cal? Thinking about shooting an antelope with my new toy.

Thanks john

Being the frugal shooter I am.....

I'd first look at die cost...then barrel life......

Then I'd look at the 20 PT...20/222 or 20 VT..

40+ grs of powder going down a 20 cal hole

means really short throat life...even cosider the

plain jane 204 Ruger......

Is it even legal to use a .20 cal on an antelope? Just doesn't seem like a good idea to me to use a varmint round on an animal that size. Not that they are huge, but I was under the impression that they were more 6mm game than .20cal?

Outdoorsman.com actually states that New Mexico has a 6mm required minimum caliber. I think that's a bit better suited to the animal.

Just because you can use it doesn't mean you should.

Actually, it's illegal in Nebraska to use a .20 cal on antelope. The law states .223 or larger delivering 900ft/lbs at 100yds.

I think the 20s are suted for medium game with the rite bullets and in the rite hands. Kinda like giving a kid that has shot 10 rounds out of a 243 then tell him he is ready to shoot a deer.??
I shoot 20 a lot and have no problem shooting game with them when all is corect dont take chanses with a iffy shot. the deer I shot this last season with a 20 BR was deed on inpact and crumboled in his tracs. I have seen them shot with 300wm and run 100 yards. My take is you have to know your equipment and your capabilitys.
Just my thoughts Kevin

Good liuck with the inproved 20-250 I shoot a 20-250 and It is capabol.

Ditto on barrel life.

But to some people barrels are expendable items. You accept whatever barrel life you get as long as the rifle is doing the job you want.

barrel bullets powder primers, there all the same. Eventually you will need more. If you think about it in some cases the cost of the bullets it takes to wear a barrel out will add up to more than the barrel itself. The barrel is just another component really. the hole 20cal antelope things doesnt sound very responsible. I dont even like shooting coyotes with a 204 ruger any more. To many run offs. Lee

While perfect shots do happen, and it is possible to use a .20 on medium game, it doesn't make it ethical or responsible. There is no point in using the absolute bare minimum caliber to hunt with, as it opens up a much larger margin of error and significantly increases the chance of the animal being wounded and suffering with a permanent crippling injury or suffering until it dies, possibly weeks or months later. What you are shooting at is a living animal and a proper caliber should be used so to insure it is taken cleanly. A little extra power and a larger bullet can go a long way towards a clean kill.

I am all for pushing the limits of a cartridge, but never on anything that is living and could suffer due to my poor judgment. And that perfect shot you line up can change in a second, and a sub-par round is only going to complicate matters. It's all about being a responsible hunter and caring about the animals you take. Proper gear falls right in with responsibility.

If there is a 20 cal bullet made for hunting game and not varmints I would like to know, all the ones that I know of are for varmints or targets if your talking about the heavy bergers. Using a 204 ruger is now legal for culling kangaroos here in australia, but the 40gr bullets will produce shallow wounds if you dont hit them in just the right spot in the head. A 22 cal 55gr soft point has that bit more penetration and hitting energy required for it. My 20 practical is set aside for foxes, cats and rabbits only. Imagine a varmint bullet shot faster and in a faster twist barrel- its only going to expand quicker and penetrate less.

I am by no means an expert but with the 309 coyotes i have shot with my 20-250 I have not had one run off if i hit it in the boiler room. It seems to me the 45 grain hornaday bullet preforms awesome. It appears to me that the 20-250 hits harder then the 22-250 and all the energy is expended on the inside of the body cavitiy with very few exit holes. I am hoping a little velocity bump will make the 55 grain berger a viable bullet for the songdogs also.

thanks John

Using a .20 Dasher here with 38gr. Unmussigs on coyotes...4500+fps.

I know a coyote is not an antelope, but it aint that far off neither...

The yotes just "faint" when i pull the trigger..
