2 Neck Sizing Questions

1. I am not a beginner in loading but I am a beginner in neck sizing. I have always FL sized. I want to start neck sizing only. I am working with a Rem 700 308 Winchester for hunting purposes. Would you suggest a 7/8-14 sizing die such as the Redding S Type Neck Sizer or go with the Wilson arbor press style? I have both presses.

2. I purchased the Redding Graphite Lube for neck sizing. Do I use it dry as is or is it supposed to be mixed with the little steel shot tub they offer?

Any education would be great.

My brother has just had the same question with his 308. He was told by his smith to use the Redding fl-s bushing die and not the Wilson for neck tension. He said you want to set up the FL die to just make bolt closing have slight tension. I use a body die to bump the shoulder every reload and then run the case through a Wilson bushing die. IMHO this keeps case size closer to chanber dimentions over a FL die. To each their own!

For Hunting and Tatical Competition I would full length resize

and check evey loaded round with a Wilson Head Space Gage.


I've never had any feeding or chambering issuses while afield.


Neck sizings OK for informal target shooting.


Mix the Graphite powder with the Steel balls as they then will

impart a thin film of powder on the case necks and not make as

much of a mess.
