2 different readings with Hornaday OAL Gauge???

I got a pm on the size of tap and drill to make your own dummy cases for the Hornady tool. The tap is 19/64" and the die is 5/16-36.

I said in my earlier post I bought the parts at drill bitts.com - the proper address is drills&cutters.com.

Again, my experiences in getting accurate readings improved a bit using cases that were fireformed to my chamber - plus you don't have to do a length measurement 'adjustment" if you use a case that was resized to zero headspace clearance in your chamber.

I've had it 3 or 4 years now. I get very repeatable results with my technique. And the on-target results make me smile, so I think I will leave well enough alone.

I dunno guys, I get fairly consistent results taking a fired case and pinching the mouth with a needle nose pliers, thus making the bullet a snug fit in the case mouth, inserting into the chamber, closing the bolt and extracting. Do this 3 or 4 times and the readings are pretty consistent. Also, I sometimes put a little Imperial wax on the ogive to make sure the bullet doesn't stick in the riflings.

After all, it is a relative measurement, a "starting point" so to speak, from which one gages his seating depth on his production ammo.

What I would like to find is a setup that seats bullets to a consistent (less than .001" variation) seating depth as measured to the ogive.

YMMV.

Stubbycat;

I see no reason that cannot be accomplished . But you will need a custom seater to get that done, not the usual run of the mill stuff. Consider a Don Nielsen seater, or one by Neil Jones. The Nielsen goes down further on the ogive than most. That's the problem with the Wilsons. They don't go down far enough, and I have 3 of those stems. Be prepared to spend some money though...

Everybody to their own and if it works keep doing it. To me beauty is as beauty does...I use the "old fashioned" split neck fireformed case method because it measures from my "actual" bolt face and my "actual" shoulder and chamber....not a theoretical chamber dimension decided by Hornady. JMHO

I have a Redding and a RCBS competition seater dies that will do that with good bullets, Later! Frank
