1st Shot Shooting High

Hey guys, I still plan to circle back with you as soon as I'm able to do some testing. I did find out a few things. Point of impact issues are typically caused by a weak spring in the erector system that keeps the reticle in place under recoil. Although it's rare, the scope manufacture said it is possible that it is resetting itself and holding.

I am going to test the gun again with another scope (and cold barrel). For now, I will leave this in the reloading forum.

Thanks again for all the feedback. I hope to have more results for you all soon.

Normally, the first shot shouldn't be nearly that far off especially if this at 100 yards? Here is a target I shot several years ago at 215 yards. The barrel had just been de-coppered and these are the 1st 5 shots. This is also a .308 Savage with a thin barrel. The 1st shot was slightly high and to the left. The 5th shot was low for whatever reason, probably me.

Had exactly this issue with an old VX1 1-4x x20 Leopold that dad had bought new and I returned to the factory for refurbishment.
Dry firing at a target you could see the cross hairs jumping around with just the firing pin fall.
Leopold sorted it and returned @ no charge ! :)

Gentlemen, I misled you and I apologize. I'm very glad that the error was mine. The issue with the"flier" was caused by the action screws being too loose. I torqued them to 30 in-lbs and now I'm getting sub-moa (including first shot, cold bore).

Thanks. I just wanted to respond in hopes that my story helps someone else.

My pencil barrel 308 Savage will put the first two rounds side by side, almost overlapping at 200 yds. The next shot will always be up and to the right about 1 moa as the barrel heats up. It's a light gun, and kicks way too hard for my retirement years shoulder, so I put a limb saver on it.

But 5 inches is quite a lot. I'm going to have to go with a first shot flinch. After that, you've convinced yourself it's not going to take your arm off and you settle down.

Edit: you've found the issue and it's not a flinch.

When things start getting hinky, I (1- check the mounts and rings and (2 check the action screws. EVERY time I see a problem.

Since this is the reloading forum, I'll share the load:
CCI 200 primers
165 gr Accubonds
44.5 gr BL-C(2) powder
Length: 2.908"
Savage 110 308 with Rifle basix trigger

sometimes the 1st bullet wants to have some free space..alone time..sometimes they are selfish and want to go off to themselves...I never liked that kind of bullet...

Tiger Fan-

BTW- If you ever need to send a rifle to a manufacturer or a gunsmith for a look-see, make sure you check those action screws when you get it back. CZ, in its infinite wisdom, hand tightened an action screw and dumb ass here didn't check. Lesson learned.
