1st Post - Optic's ???

New on the line..... I read to much and end up getting myself in trouble, can anybody relate? I'm currently having my retirement,$) vacuum built. The intended use is F-Class and possibly a little Heavy Bench, hoping to have the finish weight close to, but not over 22lbs.) The component list is as follows:

1. BAT MB 1.4" Octagon, 8.5" long with a 20MOA Picatinney Rail,Due first part of Sept.....I hope)

2. Jewell Trigger

3. Broughtn Barrels,4) - 6mm BRX,30"), 6.5x284,30"), 284 Win.,30"), 308 Win.,26"). I'm thinking by the time I toast 4 barrels, maybe I will have learned a little about this sport.

4. McMillan Tooley MBR, Stainless Pillars, 3-Way Butt

5. Farley Front Rest

6. Edgewood Bags

7. Badger Ordnance Rings

8. Schmidt Bender 5-25 x 56 PMII LP with a P4 reticle,CM Clicks.)

OK, I'm pretty confident that I have purchased quality equipment for this adventure, with one possible exception, it's my understanding this reticle subtends 0.67" at 100 yards. This is where my ignorance steps in, and your "PROFESSIONAL" opinions about this scope and reticle can help.,The scope, front rest and bags are already in my possession.) I can understand where the mil-dot reticle can be a value for hold-off's. The big question is will the thickness of the crosshair's be a negative at the extreme ranges of F-Class????? I have an older Bausch & Lomb 6-24 x 40 Elite 4000 with fine crosshairs I could use, until I could purchase another scope or have the SB's reticle replaced) if the Schmidt Bender was the wrong choice for this application. I am anxiously awaiting all replies, good or bad.

Thanx in advance, Bob,Sometimes spelled with two "o"'s)

Hi Jim, as I said "reading gets me in trouble". From what I have seen the 6.5 x 284 is a proven winner, but it seems to have a relatively short life. With the 284 win. and the possibly promising high BC of the 7mm bullets, I'm hoping to get some decent results out of this caliber and maybe longer barrel life. If it proves not to be a competitor, I'll have learned a valuable lesson along with gaining experience reading wind and working on load development........Thanx, Bob.

I am not the most experienced guy, but I'd say you have not spared any expense in putting together a first class setup. Those four barrels will have you learning for a long time. Just getting ONE caliber down takes a lot of practice much less four :). The S&B scope is probably second to none, and I would imagine that most people would respond that it depends on your preference whether or not the reticle works for you. Some like a dot, some a crosshair, some like a reticle that takes a computer system to map a grid for their hold-overs.
It all comes down to what blows your skirt up.
With your equipment it will boil down to the nut behind the trigger, and regardless of the outcome it will be an awful lot of fun trying out new loads, reading the wind, etc...
Good luck,
Mike

If you are thinking for shooting long range benchrest, you may want to get one of the barrels set up to 17 lb weight. I built my gun on a BAT M 6BR just as you are going to. I got in to 600 yds Benchrest, and I had the gun redone to 6BRX 17 lb, and can shoot both class with the same gun. With the other rounds you will need the weight. You may look in to a weight system. Sounds like a good set up.

Bob -- look at the P4-Fine reticle... 0.67 inch/100yds is WAAAAY too fat for a reticle. I think the fine is 1/4" at 100.

Where are you getting the scope?

Mark that's good advice on modifying one of the barrels for 17lb. bench rest, I had not considered that, I'll look into it. JB, I already have the S&B in hand, I purchased it and the rings from Matt Garrett,Snipers Hide,SP?)). I spoke with Tom at BAT Machine last night, he said they are working on the bolts for this round of actions and hope to have them out in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully this project will come together in the next couple of months. My smith is still waiting on one barrel and the stock. I think I'll see what I can do with the S&B as it is at this point and if things don't work out with it, I'll look into some modifications. I'm starting to look at bore guides, it seems there are a couple that are favored...Would anybody care to elaborate on the +/- of the better guides. Again all responses are welcome.

Thanx, Bob
