1st Hog for 2024

Congratulations on your first of the 2024 campaign!

Hoping to get out tomorrow to do some recon since it supposed to be in the 70's here in eastern PA. I have a bad case of groundhog fever; it happens every March. Visions of hogs bobbing up and down, trigger finger twitching, and hog heads peering out of tree lines are the main symptoms.

I worked out the Weatherby Super Varmint Master 223 this afternoon at the range off my cross stick. There was no one at the range today so didn't get the weird looks I often get because I am not shooting of the bench.

However, at 77, I ain't the shooter I once was but hey, it's all about getting out there and enjoying the beautiful countryside. At least that's what I tell myself went I miss one. ;)

"The Ground Hog Man Cometh"

I know those symptoms well! I live in Mo now where the Coyotes keep Hog numbers down. When I lived in upstate NY there were a ton of groundhogs and I loved nothing better than going out for an alll day hog hunt. I got to know several large dairy farmers that let me hunt their alphalpha fields. Some of my best hunting was Apple orchards that were absolutely eat up with Hogs. On one farm i killed 100 groundhogs the first year I hunted it!

Here's my first: My 4th albino groundhog. He's brownish due to mud in the hole. Did him with my SSK XP-100 View attachment 1535274 .250 Sav. AI, 85 gr. Nos. BT at 225 yards. ( Don't own any riflesView attachment 1535275).
For the fun of it I did one at 92 yards with my Taurus Raging Bull .500 Mag., 240 gr. Sierra HP. Sort of messed him up real bad.
Love handguns and own a few, unfortunatly none in varmint caibers. I have a Savage in 308 win that I have used to take several whitetales, at ranges out to 200 yds! Congrats on the kills. I think you are the gentelman who has amassed quite a few kills over the years with handguns! Love the sport!
