Ok, The one im building right now is going to have a 32" 1-6.7tw finished and I will be running Varget. My goal is 2850 with Lapua Brass.

John

Yea I wanted 2850 also, but I blow primers when I got up that high. Tried 23.8, 23.9 and 24 gr of 4895 this afternoon. Two shots at 23.8 was all I needed to see, serious ejecter marks, just pulled the rest. I also shot 24.5 of varget again with more neck tension and it shot lights out and the muzzle velocities were allot more consistent (sd 5) in the once fired brass with shoulders bumped .001. I wont get to shoot 1k again to the Tullahoma state match, so I got a while to fine tune it. I'm bound and determined to make long range master with this thing, lol.

Can you make Oak Ridge either day this weekend?

Wish I could but it's a 7hr drive for me.

I'm getting a feel for the velocities that people may actually be getting and I think some may be overestimating.

The OPs electronic target shows 1391 v when the bullet passed it at 1000 yards, that equates to something in the range of 2750 MV give or take depending on elevation, which makes sense as it jives with my velocities in that load range for Varget.

High getting into the mid to high 2800s seem a bit over the top at least with Varget. Maybe the 4895 or something else is the answer.

My buddy Scott Harris on this forum runs an identical set up minus the 2" extra I have on my barrel and uses H4895 and gets 2850 no pressure signs ...

John, we have two barrels:

30" = 2790 w/ 24.0 gr H4895 .020 off the lands w/ .200"ish FB
32" = 2830 w/ 24.0 gr H4895 .020 off the lands.

Chono'd these last weekend since we were testing a new barrel at 1K. It was a little erratic the first string, but then settled down and shot well. I try to run same brass, load for all barrels to simplify things. My load development consists of finding where .020" off the lands is and putting enough powder in the case to get around 2800fps (32" barrel) and single-digit SD. If the SD is higher than that, I try to figure out how I am messing up the brass prep because that is the usual culprit.

What's your base to ogive measurement? Mine is 2.074 to the lands now (1050 rounds), started at 2.058. I will start at 2.100 with the next barrel. I'm using a 4 groove bartlein and ptg match reamer with 252 neck and throating reamer. What would cause me to get serious pressure when I get above 2800 and everybody else being able to run 2850-2900 and get 10 firings on the brass. For the first 800 rounds I ran 24.0gr of 4895 soft seated and got 3 firings on my first batch of brass before primer pockets were toast. I got a new lot of 4895 and it can't get it to shoot anymore at any powder charge.

Curious. Have you tried R-15? It worked best for me both in accuracy and velocity. Also, 2000MR seems to be a very good option. I've never tried it but some 223 shooters are doing well with it.

When I shot at Blakely this past weekend the electronic target said my velocities were 1375-1426. My chrony says I'm running 2786-2803 and I've never gotten an ES that high. The bullets I used were trimmed and pointed and I'm thinking I could have possible reduced the bc of the bullets and made them inconsistent to give me those speeds. I'm going to try pointed only next time because I did not like the way the meplats looked, some were filled in with shavings and some were open.

Brad, I don't think you trimming and pointing them is the culprit. I think its something going on in your brass prep, neck tension, etc.
