1k f-class caliber

I shoot in 600 yard f-class matches locally. I want to get started in 1k matches and really want try a bigger cartridge than the 6mm dasher I'm using now. I've shot it to 1k a few times and it really gets pushed around in the wind. What would you recommend?

David is right. The .284 Win is the best all around choice for 1000 yard F-Open. It is easy to load and tune, very accurate and excellent brass is available in Lapua 6.5-.284. I shoot a .284 Shehane, which has a slight advantage over the original. That advantage was not enough to beat David on a couple of occasions.

I am no expert compared to others on this forum, but it seems that shooting the heavy 7mm bullets does give an advantage in the wind. Several cartridges do this well: .284, .284 shenane, .280, and my personal choice, the 7 SAUM

It's not that they cannot work, but I witnessed several well known and national record holding competitors at Raton saying bad words about their magnums when they could not hold vertical. Just sayin'...

LET ME ADD TO THE 'GATOR'S' WORDS - YOU DON'T shoot the SAUM/WSM like you do the .284 of smaller.

you don't need 'mag.' to shoot record scores!!! slow - 2850 +/- will allow you to stay on the gun 'better' than the 'blast' you get from mags. yes, the extra vel. you get from mags will help with wind drift, but, if you can't read the wind - your NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO SHOOT THROUGH IT!!!

ONLY 120mm 'smooth bore' can do that [and they also use computers.

Jim, if you don't know him I'm going to venture a guess and say he's in the Memphis area, They do the 600 yard stuff most often I think. We haven't done that many 600 yard matches in the last couple of yrs at Oak Ridge. (though I like the mid range stuff on the proposed schedule for 2013, maybe we'll get some new shooters)

.284 works good for me. tied a record at 600 yards one and 2nd at nationals. If you can;t do it with a .284 (or280) your not going to do it. But remember its not the gun, its the person behind the gun.

Words of advice, You don't need to go as large on the caliber as you might think! Work your way up slow and see how thing work out. I have tried about everything from the 6BR all the way up to the 7mm mags, from what i have seen is the larger the caliber the harder the rifle is to shoot accurately. Like others have said the 284 is about as big as you need to go before recoil becomes a major issue. I have seen a few people that could not handle the recoil of the 284 and there scores suffered. I personally have gone to just 2 calibers 6brx for mid range and 6.5-284 for long range! When shooting the 284 or larger caliber, everything from your front rest to the rear bag all need to be set up perfect or strange things start to happen under heavy recoil. Accuracy first!

Most that I know use somewhere between .200" and .220". My reamer has .220", .200" might be better.

Here's a little to think about, I shoot both 6XC and 280AI both have 30 inch tubes. When I ran my best loads across the chrono, the 280 was about 2850 and the XC was at 3200. When I ran the data in the Sierra Infiniti there was only a couple of inches of drift difference at 1,000. Now the XC has substantially less recoil and stays put better soooo I am not sure that the big stuff is really worth the extra powder, recoil, bullet cost ect. Just my 2 Cnts worth.

I will cast a vote for any fast 6 pushing 115s above 3000. I shoot an xc and it does just fine. A big 7 will out do it, but check the drift charts on the caliber info page. The 6's do a lot better than people give them credit for.
