1in8" twist for .223

80 VLD's are very good in a 8 twist. They are long and need to be seated in the neck with only the boat tail below the donut area. 23.5 to 24.5 Varget does well in my bolt gun.

The need for a faster .223 twist is due to the bullet length not weight. As the weight of a .224 dia bullet goes up so does its length, that's the reason for a faster twist.

If you’re limiting yourself to 2.26” overall length, then there’s no need to go faster than 8 twist. If you are going to load long for longer bullets, a 7 or even 6.5tw can be justified.

For most normal AR shooting a 8 twist is great. Don't forget to try the Nosler 40 gr BT, my Shilen 8 twist will put 12 into less than an inch. You can shoot 95 SMK in a 6 twist, they wouldn't stabilize in a 7 twist...velocity was 2450 fps out of the mag feed 7 twist 20" 2500 fps showed pressure signs.

My AR with 18" LaRue barrel is 1:8 twist with Wylde chamber, shoots 40 Nosler BT grain well and Sierra tipped MatchKing in 77 grain very well. In between 50 V-max and 55 BT shoot quite well.
