1in8" twist for .223

Probably the correct twist rate for any civilian ar platform. 1:7 is more for bolt actions regularly shooting 77 and heavier bullets. I wanted full bc in any 80 I wanted so I got a 1:7.

Here is the Berger 80.5 Fullbore bullet at 2750 and sea level with the Berger Stability Calculator, which is free online, using the 1:8 twist

At the bottom, it lists the Berger Bullets that are recommended for 1:8 twist to give you an idea of how they all play.
You should give that calculator a try, it is easy to run and costs nothing.
If you are not using a Berger bullet from the drop down menu, you can still research the length dimension of the ones you want to play with and plug that info in the blanks and go.

8 twist is fine. I have an RRA 16" 9 twist Delta Mid, that
groups well to 500, with IMI mod 77's. Key is the speed
the Israeli's put into their mil ammo.

8 twist works great for 75 gr and 80 gr bullets. My 8 twist bolt rifle likes Berger 80.5 gr full bore bullets. Shoots .2 at 100 yards.

I have two Tikka 223 Rem with 8" twist.

The 55 Vmax and Nosler BT's shoot ok, in the 7/8" moa range. The 60 Vmax shoots in the 1/2 moa range. I haven't tried anything heavier since the 60 Vmax does exactly what I need for varmint and predator hunting.

The added benefit is that the 60 Vmax's are not terribly expensive.

Hello Laurie! They’re happily shorter than my Remingtons.
The gun I have now is 1.939 to the lands using the Hornady tool with a Sierra 77 at the ogive.
The last one I gave to a friend was 1.938.
The one I gave my son in law was 1.947. This was an earlier T3.
Too long for magazine loading but not bad. Plenty of bullet in the neck.

I have heard of some 1/9 shooting 69gr match kings well and I have heard some don't like anything over 55 gr.... 1/8 in an AR is perfect in my opinion since the 90gr bullets in a 1/7 won't fit in the magazine so what good is it.... I shoot as low as 50gr in my 1/7 but have never tried anything lighter....

I shoot the 75gr ELD in my Bartlein 7.75 twist, couldn't get the 80.5 to shoot as well, but didn't spend a lot of time on it as I have a large supply of the ELDs. I like the velocity gains myself over a heavier bullet. 2000pp pushes them to 2930fps with a 26" tube.
