190 gr bullet in .30-30

Anyone have any experience using a heavier bullet in a .30-30 with the standard 1-12 twist? I am thinking about a 180-190 round nose or flat point, similar to the old .303 Savage bullet.
Thanks

Since this can't be an orginal idea, I assume that it has been tried and had little to offer. I will start on it and satisfy my curosity with a heavy round nose bullet, say a 180gr., and see what happens.

now mr Boggs, go look at the lyman cast 311291 it shoots great and with the gas check version is able to match jacketed bullets out of this case. i bbl slug 308 and i size 309 using a hardness of 6.5 on my Saeco tester.
Weight out of my mold is abou 180

You never mentioned what you are wanting to do with that heavy bullet and if it is a cast or jacketed bullet. If it is hunting you have in mind and you are going to use a jacketed bullet you will have little or no expansion. The jacket is too thick for the low velocity you are going to achieve with a 30-30. Those bullets are made for 30-06 class rifles. If it is punching paper then 1-12 twist should work with these bullets but they will be falling like a rock because they are so long they will take up lots of powder room in the case that is much needed to get velocity.

I don't see it this way, I shoot factory 170's out of my 30/30 all the time! I killed a crow @ 100 with it once and a coyote at just a little over 200 yards, and I have killed multiple elk with it at those distances why would a 10-20 more make such a HUGE difference! I think if it will stabilize the 190's you would be fine Bill, I have a bolt action Savage 30/30 not sure the twist rate on it but if I can get the 190 Hornaday interlocks that I use in my .300 wby mag seated to fit in the clip I will give them a go, I use this rifle for my road hunting gun, it is short and I can easily whirl it out either window ;D

Wayne Nice to hear from you. The 300 savage has killed a lot of elk with a 180 gr. bullet and I bet most were started at about 2400fps. Should be fairly easy to get 2100-2200 out of them in a .30-30 which should be adequate at 150 yds or so. Might do some expansion tests myself. My good friend that lives in SE Alaska tells me his grandfather used a Savage 99 in .303 for 50 yrs as his go to rifle for everything. Using the 190gr bullet, getting close, and placing the shot always did the job.
Best regards
Bill

Bill,
My Father in law owned a .303 Savage, not to be confused with the British infield .303,and he killed a lot of deer and elk with it before he upgraded to a #99 in .308 I can't see why you couldn't Kill elk at the ranges mentioned with a 190 pill in a 30/30, especially if the rifle had good H/S and was in good working order, let me know your results :)
Wayne.
