180 Ballistic Tip in .308 Win.

Hello everyone! This is my first post here. I've reloaded for 30 plus years, but not for .308. Just want to pick your brain.

I have IMR 4895, 4064, and 4350 as well as RE 17 on hand. CCI BR2 and 200 as well as REM 9 1/2 and 9 1/2M primers.

What would be the recommended load with the 180 ballistic tip?

All replies are appreciated.

Steve

The most accurate load tested by Nosler on their web reloading page says 39.5 grains of IMR4895 gave best results in their test gun. So start slightly lower as always and I think you will be well pleased with the end result. I would start at 38.0 grains of IMR4895.

Thanks, that information is readily available. I am really looking for actual experience if anyone has any with this bullet. Sorry I wasn't more explicit with my question.

What are you actually doing with this bullet? Are you hunting and which type of animal. From what I have read elsewhere that the 180 ballistic tip is not good on elk.

The heavy ballistic tips work fine on elk, you just can't push them too fast or you're going to have problems.

I would say you are fine then. Deer are fairly easy to kill and that bullet will hammer right through.

Do you have any Varget? My rifle shoots lights out with a stout load of Varget and 180 Speer boat tails. Sorry, I don't have any experience with the powders you listed in 308.

44.0 of Varget
43.6 of Reloader 15

great choice in bullets good bullet performance at 308 Win velocities 180gr BT
Reloader 15 @ 43.2
WW Brass and Fed 210 M
2.795”

Only 4895/4064 acceptable and no magnum primers needed with stick powder in 308 Win
Welcome to the board my friend ! You will find your load at 41.7 to 42.0 of IMR 4064 Rem 9.5 and WW cases with 180 BT and the above COAL

Years ago 44.0 of IMR 4064 in LC brass and 168 MK was my load

180gr pretty heavy for the hunting 308. My very best advice is Hammer Bullets, 137gr Hammer Hunter. Turn up the speed on the Hammer frangible monolithic and kill like no other. The front end sheds 4 petals and the shank punches through with a square front resulting in DRT and "die in sight" kills. Deer, elk, buffalo...

Eight year old thread but can stand to be updated based on all the newer bullets available.

My very best advice is Hammer Bullets, 137gr Hammer Hunter.

Recommended twist is 1-6.5″ or faster
Bullet length is 1.565″
Nose length is .8736″
Bullet weight is 139g
Recommended use: Big game hunting
G7-BC=.280 estimated

;)

I been using powerpro 2000 mr in my 308’s. One i built for my brother is using 180 nosler bt. Its 26” barrel running bit over 2700 fps. Shot around 2” at 565 yrds. Old version of the bt were softer, shot one deer with them that hit spine going down into chest, shooting from high up on hill down into valley. Bullet came apart on bone and never exited but was satisfactory.
I use 2000mr in mine using 180 berger elites, tick under 2800 fps. Also have a 165 tipped gameking load at 2950 with the same powder.
Varget is suppose to be good but i never got bergers to shoot in my brothers gun with that. Havent tried in mine.
Reloder 17 also gave good velocity with berger 180 but didnt shoot great in my brothers gun.
I used magnum primers.
