17PPC Questions?

I am contemplating a 17PPC build and was wondering if there were any of you that have one?

Which brand barrel is most often used for the 17 cal wildcats?

I will need a 1 in 9 twist for Todd Kindler's 30 gr bullets.

What is the optimum barrel length for the 17PPC?

Todd is the best guy to talk to IMHO on the issue. What sort of rifle are you looking to build?, a light walking rifle then maybe 22-24 inches but a heavy varmint then maybe 28 inches, you will loose maybe 150fps per inch of barrel.

Todd's book on 17s shows a Ruger No1 with a 26 1/2 inch tube getting some impressive figures.

I have just had fitted a stainless Bartlien to a 20BR and it is going very well.

A friend of mine shoots one using a PPC case .100' short. He calls it a DT - Dog Terminator. This is a light/handy dedicated coyote rifle but I can't remember how long the barrel is.......has a 10' twist and shoots 30 golds at well over 4000 fps. That PPC brass is strong and handles high pressure. The gun is real accurate and he won a postal match with it.

Ackman, does your friend shoot 30gr Golds out of a 1-10'?
I have Todd's book. He says to just put on a 1-9' and be done with it. It will handle any bullet up to and including his 30's.
Your friends rifle is stabilizing those 30's with a 1-10'?
What kind of MV is he getting? What's the load?

I don't know if I want a a walking rifle,sporter barrel) or a bench style rifle,fat heavy barrel). Maybe a rifle along the lines of a Rem 700 Varmint barrel style.

Dennis, it's been a couple years since I've seen the gun or we've talked about it. Uses a Rampro action and about 22' barrel, 10 twist. I wouldn't remember the load except that it's hot,but safe) and 30golds are in the mid 4100's getting up close to 4200. It's deadly on coyotes. If you're concerned, just go with 9 twist and don't worry.
