17HMR Rifle Choice(s)

I got the savage model 9317RG in 2004, with the varmint barrel and a really pretty wood stock. Its an awesome gun. Shoots right around .75 inch at 100 yards with 5 shots. I use the 20 grain CCI ammo. I also use the original hornady ammo 17 grain red tip ammo as well. They are pretty interchangeable for accuracy with my rifle. I still have and use that rifle. It probably has a 1,000 rounds down the tube.

Chrono results for 17 HMR VNT ammo out of an Annie pistol, 12" barrel, average MV 2495, ES of 120. Advertised MV is 2560.

If you have not purchased yet, then on a budget I would get the ruger american. If you got the money, I would pick a CZ. The factory barrels are hit or miss. Could get a tack driver or a lemon. The good part is you could try a new factory barrel or an aftermarket. Here is a range report on my 455 17 hmr flutted varmint. Hope this helps.

Out of the box this gun was right about moa with CCI vmax, and just over moa with Hornady vmax. After determining the barrel had potential, I sent the gun to have it pillar bedded, and then I glass bedded it myself. With college and so on, I only had it on the range once since bedding, and I took it hunting a few times over the last couple years. I finally moved to Las Vegas, and I can now shoot on public land just 20 minutes away. Had it out 3 times now. I had to blow through the crappy lead free ammo left over from commiefornistan the first time. Last time I shot up some Hornady Vmax and it averaged .6 over 10 groups. It was a bit windy though, and I was tired from hunching over the bench all day.

Today I first tested A17. It wasn't too bad, right around moa. Then I tried CCI 17 gr TNT, and I found a winner.

What I notice after bedding may or may not be an improvement in accuracy. What I notice is that all loads tested (including the lead free), have the same POI. The lead free before bedding was like 5 inches away from the other ammo.

Next time I will test the 20 gr options.

I am guessing it would do even better on a concrete bench.
