178gr Amax out a 10 twist .308?

Gettin my custom 10 twist .308 very soon. Its being finished at 24". I have some 190gr SMK's and 178gr Amax. I read alot about the SMK's, but have not found much info on the Amax. Im just excited about getting this rifle and curious how the Amax bullets will shoot. How accurate are you guys getting the Amax bullets to shoot out of your .308's? What powders are you guys using (I have lots of Varget)? Seating distance from lands?

I like the thought of having a bullet that I can hunt and target shoot with! When I can find some 175gr SMK's I will try them too. Let me hear it guys! Thanks!

Many folks have good luck with the 178amax and 10 twist barrels.

Varget will work well, as will RE15, IMR4064, IMR4895.......all the same powders that work great with the 175smk.

Good luck!

They should be great but I finally settled for 168's and the berger 185's. I also liked the sierra 180 matchkings but in my rifle 168 is king.

My .308 loves 168 Amax's (1:11 twist, tho).

Groups onto a 6" plate at 600 yards like you wern't trying.

178's should work great in a 1:10 and my shooting buddy uses just that through his R700-AAC-SD

They like to be "jammed" onto lands, in my findings. 5-10 thousandths

Cool. im soooo excited about getting this rifle. Its my first custom rifle. Trued rem700, bartlein 5r 10 twist mtu contour @ 24", hs stock skim bedded and 40x le trigger. Badger Ordnance everything: knob, rail, rings and recoil lug. Rail is bedded and rings lapped too. The smith is using a bisley reamer. I was gonna get my own reamer from kiff, but the smith said this reamer is great for the bullets I told him I plan on shooting. I will be shooting from bipod at 100-1000 yards. 90% of the time under 700 yards. My idea is to have a "do it all" rifle. FTR, hunting and plinking. Figured a .308win is a good choice for my first custom rig.

keep the feedback coming. Thanks!

They shot pretty darn good in my 1-10 twist .308. I believe I took 2nd at Manatee 1 time shooting the 565 4" Claybird Match out of a stock Savage LE. :D

Awesome. I have 500 30cal 178g Amax's so they better shoot! LOL, Im sure they will do great.

I been checking all the major shooting goods suppliers websites 3 times a day, 7 days a week for the past 6 weeks. FINALLY I found 500 round boxes of 30cal 175g HPBT Sierra Matchkings in stock today at Powder Valley. They posted them in stock on there website this morning and was out of stock by the afternoon! Now im totally stocked up and ready for my 308win! Not much longer and I will be shooting it!

Well, I hope so ............... BUT there is an old and very true saying. Let the barrel tell you what bullets it likes. By that, it means that bullet A may perform brilliantly in Barrel X, so-so in Barrel Y, and badly in Barrel Z. It's not an issue about good or bad bullets, or good or bad barrels, but in the details of their match to each other. That's primarily about bullet v bore/groove dimensions, but many other factors too - jacket thickness / hardness, bullet ogive type and shape and how well it suits the chamber's freebore, leade angle ........... and so on, and so forth.

With two makes and models of bullet, the odds are one will perform very well, and if you're lucky both will .... but nothing is guaranteed. The good news is that if you are unlucky and have to unload a few hundred bullets, I'd imagine the market will snap them up at full price as things are.

The logical process is to only buy 100 each of potentially suitable models when you start load development, see what works, then stock up with that / those model(s). That takes no account of current supply conditions of course, when it becomes expedient to grab whatever's available, and trade it for something else afterwards if need be. FWIW, 'your' panic buying and stock shortage has now moved across the Atlantic to us in the UK as we get most of our powders and nearly all bullets and primers from the US. Only we're getting into an even worse mess than you guys as with a small market, European importers might only get a couple of shipments a year. When the shipping containers turn up with only a quarter to half the order fulfilled, it'll be 6 or even 12 months before we get another chance to obtain what's on order.

The 136gr Lapua's shoot very well out of my 6.5x47 Lapua with H4350 usually less than 1/2" but nothing shoots even close too the 123gr Lapua. bullet on top of 36.2grs of Varget set the bullet touching the lands little one hole 5 shot groups. Low 2's high 1's. The name is 6.5X47 Lapua and I have never found and bullets that shoot as well as the Lapua's but after all they designed it to shoot their bullets.

??? 8 year old thread on 30 caliber?

10 twist shoots the 178s very well. Optimum stability and they perform well on deer or bigger game. Even from the .308 Win.
"Even from a .308 Win" ? Wow . Guess the millions of deer and bigger game taken in the last seventy years didn't know the hunter was using a .308 Win ? That's just a little condescending to those of us who have 3 - 4 - or more .308's in our gun cabinets .

Take that as you prefer but condescending it wasn't. I shoot the 308 regularly and kill deer regularly with it. The "even from a 308" was for those that don't think it's worthy of shooting big game at long ranges. If anything, I'm more of an advocate of the cartridge and definitely never accused of being condescending of it. In fact, you'd probably disagree with my killing deer at ranges behind 800 yards with one. Most do

Nope . I wouldn't disagree on that . Good load , good rifle , and marksmanship required . Took a Elk at 670 yards with a .308 . For those of us who regularly shoot at those longer distances on a F class target , it's not a "High-risk" shot . Because we know both the rifle , round , and shooter's capabilities .

In most cases being the 308 isn't a speed demon, people go a bit faster on the barrels using heavy bullets to compensate for the slower bullet speed. With the 178 that's not an issue. I've shot my 10 twist 308s using 212 grain bullets with no issues. The 185 vlds are my preferred long range bullets. The Venerable 308 is underrated but will prevail in places most do not believe it can.

I did not find it condescending at all. Complimentary actually

My brother shot a 7/8 group at 500yds with the 178's and 43.5 varget cci 200, it was vertical but still 7/8
That is the same load I use or 43.3 gr. slightly better in mine. It also loves the 175MK, mine is the 5R Milspec
with 11.25 twist.
The OP ma be on the 2nd or 3rd barrel by now but I decided to respond anyway.
