178 A-Max vs 178 BTHP

My go to load uses a 178 Amax bullet. I cannot find them in stock to get a good stock pile. Wondering if I would get close to similar results by using 178 BTHP or should I just wait to find more 178 Amax.

I have probably 250 loaded and ready and another 200 Amax bullets so its not like I needing them tomorrow but wanting to see others opinions on 178 BTHP.

Thanks

if you want to find out rather than wonder, I can sell you a couple of boxes of 178 BTHP from Hornady.

I've standardized on the Sierra 175 MK meself, so I have the Hornady available.

Assuming that bearing surface length and jacket consistency is the same they should be pretty much the same in performance. Only thing I found between the A-Max and most BTHP's is consistency of length and meplats varied in the BTHP's more than the A-Max with the poly tip.

I have used both to 500 Meters on 5 inch steel targets out of my Douglas barrelled M700 with AR Comp and CFE 223. If you have trouble finding the AMAX bullets rest assured the 178 grain HPBT bullets will shoot well. I was getting 1/2 m.o.a. groups to that distance with both powders. I hope to find a few more boxes to try out of my Palma rifle. Hope this helps.

The 178 grain HPBT has a slightly higher BC than the A-Max. I haven't tried the HPBT in my 308 but I just started using the A-Max. It is extremely accurate and works well with my 12 twist barrel.

Here's a ten shot group @100 meters.

I just bought 5-100ct boxes of 178gr Hornady Amax from Natchez about 3 weeks ago. I also bought 5-100ct boxes of 175gr Sierra Matchkings from Powder Valley 4 days ago. What im saying is.....you need to check all the major Vendors through out the whole country 4-5 times a day 7 days a week until you find what you are looking for. You CAN find suppliers if you stay at it and put in the effort. Also, go on Google and look up reloading/shooting supply stores in each state. It takes some time to do that, but thats what you gotta do to get what you need. I noticed you CAN find items at some of the smaller stores because not everybody knows about them. I found a store call recobs target shop in Wisconsin and I found some supplies there. Just stay at it and you will find what you are looking for. This post was a little longer than I planned on! Lol

good luck!! as the 178 BTHP production has been suspended.

I am looking for some now. Local gun store has some for $38/100. Ain't going to pay gouging prices. I bought my current stock in Jan for $27/100

I guess some will have to make the choice to HAVE some at $38 or keep WISHING for some at $27.

I used to by gasoline for $0.27.9 per gallon. Sadly they quit making that kind. :'(

I'm a wisher ;D

No doubt you've heard the saying "You can wish in one hand and defecate in the other and you know which hand will fill up first".

Wishing won't be bringing back the good old prices. Only way bullet prices are going to go down is if there is ever a "glut" on the market and manufacturers start running "Sales".
