175 XLD in .284 Win or .284 Shehane?

Has anyone tried this combo?

Are the 175's better jammed or jumped?

Do they have a certain velocity they tend to like?

I assumed they would like to be jammed as other VLD style bullets but I am having a hard time finding a load for these bullets in a .284 Shehane w/30" 5R Kreiger, Rem XR-100 action, 215M Primers (also tried BR2) and 6.5-284 Lapua cases with H 4831SC. Tried in .5gr increments from 51g to 57g with the bullets jammed .015 with no loads that really impressed me. I was lucky to keep under 1" at 100m

I tried the 180's but was having extreme sporadic pressure issues with the bullets I have.

Using any of the loads with the 180"s in the article here get's me primer pockets that will no longer hold a primer or a facefull of blowback gases from pierced primers.

I have often found bergers like to have a little jump or be barely in the lands. On the other hand I recently worked up a load for the 162 amax which works best in my 7mm saum about 23 thou off hard engrave( about 30 thou or so into the lands). It grouped consistently under an 1.5 and some under 1 inch with them at 500 yards( on a rather windy day). I am really curious to see what it will do on a calm day.By the way, I recognize your handle from canadiangunnutz.

In my .284, the XLD touched rifling at .090" further out than the 180 VLD. The attached image shows the relative ogive lengths of XLD, VLD and Hybrid. Other than accounting for the seating depth, I would treat it like a VLD.

BTW, VLD bullets do not necessarily have to be jammed. The link below is a Berger blog post describing a method to find best VLD seating depth.

My usual load development is to start with the bullet just at the lands with .3-.5gr incremental loads.

Choose the best of the powder loads and fine tune with the seating depth.

I have yet to find a promising load with the 175's and my normal method so it would be a complete start from scratch with the above mentioned method as well as another 200+ rounds down the barrel to work up a load that way.

I do have a box of the 162 Amax that I would like to try in this barrel, maybe the shorter, lighter bullet will work better in my 1:9 twist.

Yes, I am on CGN as well.

Sleepy Gator, that link you put up gives some good info.

I just did my first ladder test with Amaxs yesturday and have never shot a bullet with secant ogive. Im shooting the 140gr .264 but it shouldbe very usefull. Thanks.

.284 Win
The main problem I am having with the XLD is getting consistent seating depth due to the shape of the Redding seating stem. I even tried the Redding VLD seating stem, but the bullet indexes somewhere on the lower part of the ogive rather than the beginning of the bearing surface. I don’t think it’s topping out on the point.

Despite the inconsistent seating, I am getting ok long range results with the XLD. On the F-Class target I think they shoot about as well as the 180 vld in my rifle. I am jamming them 15 thou, so they may be soft seating. They printed about 1 minute higher at 1000 yards with the same load that I use with the 180; 53 gr H-4831sc, Lapua 6.5x284 brass & CCI BR primers.

If you haven't shot the AMAXs yet please try them my 284 1-9 Broughton loves them.
I will be trying them tomorrow. I only have 100 and I am not sure if more are available locally.

Another 50 rounds down the barrel tonite with the 175's jammed (.015), jumped (.020), jumped more (.050), jumped even more (.080) and even more (.110) with nothing less than 1" at 100m. :o :o

Have a match this coming weekend and the following weekend so I only have a feew days to load if I can indeed find something for it.

I forgot to mention, they shot like crap at close range. They shot fine further out. It almost makes me believe in bullets falling asleep, as skeptical as I am about that.

The A-Max don't shoot for me (mines a Broughton 1-9"), wish I could find a good load I have 500 sitting around here. What are you guys using?
