.17 vld

I checked Todd's book and it is in fact 15. Back when, I shot them up to 3900fps with my 27" 17ppcc rifle.
Pretty sure we have William Davis to thank for the design of that bullet. It seems to me he also designed a similar bullet in 20 caliber that was 62 grains. The 17/37 has a b.c. of .326

Have you ever shot the .17 gr 37gr bullets or the 62 gr .20 if they were ever made.
How did they shoot.

Hal,
I have shot the 17/37 out of a 7 twist 17ppc rifle, that Lilja stabilized the 37 all the way from 2400fps up to a high of 3900fps.I also have some xp_100s that have a 6 twist and a 10 twist for the 30 Kindler Golds. As far as the 62/20 I have only seen pictures from a friend in Texas, I believe that is one of a very few. Not sure who has the dies for it anymore. The 37s were very accurate, Bergers have always done well for me,especially the old ones.I really hope one day we will see a ELD-VT in 20 caliber because I think the 20 caliber fills a niche that might suprise a lot of people. The b.c. and energy way out yonder of the 17s just won't do what I think I need done.

Don Unmussig made 57 and I believe a 62 grain 20

I shot 50s and 57s from a 20-250 that Don made. I also had a few 62s to try and I’m pretty sure he made those as well.

Quite the ballistic performance with the 57s and 62s for sure.

Thanks for the reply.
Any info on the rifles or groups or accuracy potential, near or far.
Ever shoot anything with those bullets?

The rifle was a walking varmint weight 700. Douglas barrel with a 9 twist, I think I had the 4 taper from them.

24” finished length.

I could run 55 Bergers at 3750
57 Unmussigs were happier at 3650
The 62s shot the best at 3500

All three bullets would shoot very small groups, many that I measured down into the .2s.

I used an edge fill McMillan stock on the setup, pillar bedded.

The farthest 2 coyotes I have ever killed were with this rifle. One with the 55 Berger and one with the 57 Unmussig.

I killed a pile of them with both bullets however. Most were shot from 150-600 yards. Bullet performance was similar with a slight edge in fur damage to the good for the 57.

I never shot a critter with the 62s

Don figured his 57 was close to a .400g1 bc I don’t remember what I ran it at in my ballistics calculator but it was for sure in the high 380s if I remember correctly once I had the program trued to the setup.

Barrel life was the killer with the rifle for me. 500-600 rounds of very good accuracy followed by a rapid decline from there.

Had I not had the urge to shoot it all the time it would have lasted more than 2 winters of killing coyotes for sure.

Does Don Unmussig still make bullets.
What price range and deliver on bullets?

Hal
I last ordered from him a few years ago.

I don’t have his number any more but he used to be on this forum. Im sure someone will have his number.
