17 Squirrel

For what ever reason I have the desire to either build or purchase one of these. I currently have a 17 fireball in a 700 Remington so I surmise I can just change barrels but not sure. Any input or advice would be greatly apperceived. Thanks in advance.

Parent case of the 17 Squirrel is the 22 Hornet. Requires different bolt face than your 17 Fireball. Some info on the 17 Squirrel is attached. One can buy formed 17 Squirrel brass if one wants to avoid the hassle of forming it.

Dang I was hoping for perhaps just re chamber the barrel

Aside from being a different bolt face, the 17 Squirrel is only 1 inch long - you would never be able to make the case function in a Rem700.

You would need to build on a falling block, or very small bolt action, like a CZ 527 that was originally a Hornet.

Cooper used to chamber their single shot Model 38 for the 17 Squirrel. I have one and it is an accurate and fun little cartridge to shoot if you buy the formed brass. You may find one for sale if you post on www.saubier.com.
