17 Squirrel build

Hey everyone,

I want to build a 17 Squirrel cal. rifle, but I don't know what action would be best to build off of? It would be a target gun. I'm unsure what barrel I would want to get, and I will be making the stock from a stock blank.

Thanks,
Siiri

Hey Firearmdoc1,

This should help answer your question. Also this is pretty much why I want to build this cal. because you have to so extensively build the cases.

Cooper if you want it now, cz 527 woulda be my choice though. Also check out the mink line, a wee but bigger than the squirrel but imo better choice as they feed from magazines.

You are better off with a small action like the CZ 527. I built one for a customer, recently on a Savage large target action. The cases are so short that they pop out from under the extractor before the bolt comes far enough to the rear to eject from the port.

Doc: On the Savage action, if you pull the ejector rod and spring, the case will stay on the bolt head till you pick it off. Ends up being a single shot but you don't have to think about extraction issues. ;)

You don't have to pull it and leave it out. Just turn it end for end and will will be real close to flush and no ejection. Fills the hole and if you ever want it back it's right there.

I removed the extractor and explained to the customer. He was OK with that. I tried the inverting route but it didn't remedy the problem. I still think a smaller action would be the ticket.

Ok, how about a barrel stubbed Contender or Encore? Flat breach, many barrel options, no "loading and unloading problems", unless you have fat fingers, and if you don't like it when you are done, and you went Contender, you can sell it to me cheap! See Eagle View arms for barrel stubbing.

The CZ 527 is perfect for the small cartridges. I've done a slew of them. I cone the breech like a M70 Win. and feeding is slick. Now, if CZ would just turn the safety around.

My 17 Squirrel is built on a Martini, I would think any Hornet based rifle would work especially if target work is what you'll be doing with it.
