17 remington fireball

hi guys just got a barrel coming off a lad i know in 17 caliber.

its a shillen 1 in 10 twist stainless match barrel 29 inches long.

so im going to have it chambered and fitted to a tikka m595 action
and i wanted to no what would be the best barrel length to go for ?
im thinking of 22 inches this will give good fps well keeping the rifle length pretty compact still.

what do you guys think ? and what loads are you putting through your rifles please.
i understand as its a 1 in 10 twist it more then likely wont shoot the 30 grain bullets.
which isnt a problem as i want to use 20 or 25 grain bt ammo as the ground im going to be shooting it over it pretty flat. so will be better if it breaks up on impact

I just had a 17FB built this fall by Bob Green a 24" 9 twist Pacnor on a mod 7 action it shoots the 20gr Vmax great with RL10 and 8208XBR also shoots the 25gr Vmax I'll try to dig up my chrono data.

Either 22 or 23" would be fine. Mine (MIV's) are 23" and it's a good length, balances well on a Sako AI action. You don't need anymore than that. Accuracy loads with 25's are doing 3985-4055 which is plenty fast. And going an inch shorter to 22" barrel wouldn't lose enough to even think twice about.

cheers guys im going to go for a 23 inch barrel. i have been told that the 10 twist might not shoot the 25 vmax because of the length of them. have any of you guys found this. if you had a 10 twist barrel.

it doesnt bother me to much as the 20 grain vmax will do for what i need of the rifle. i just wanted to know what you guys think ?

as i bet alot of the guys on here have tryed different powder, barrel lengths, twists etc.

of course over here it isnt that easy just to go out and buy different barrels as you have to have slots for them on your ticket if there chambered.

this is why this forum gives great advice and saves alot of time and money on trying different things. when alot of you on here have allready done it

yes you are correct. most 10 twist barrels won't stabilize the 25Vmax because of its length. There are some shorter 25 grain bullets available that will work. You would want to look at the 25 grain bullets made by Todd Kindler at the woodchuck den.

yes i hear his stuff is superb. but because i live in england they wont send them over here :(

any of you guys got a fireball built on a tikka m595 action ?

jamie, as stated 24" is plenty, and as above the 25 v-max won't stabalize properly in a 1 in 10" twist. Try 20/25 gr Berger match varmints, the 25's work superb in my .17 rem, you just won't be running at the speed of the .17 rem though. ;)

ATB.

ps You will be pleased with your Shilen if it shoots like mine on the .17 rem ;)

UP DATE.......To my surprise and after working on some loads, my 1 in 10" Shilen as well as a good mates shoots the 25gr V-max into groups about the size of a drawing pin head

ATB.

I dont have the article in front of me now but I read in Varmint Hunters Magizine awhile back, a guy done testing on a 17 fireball. He noticed definate velocity gains in barrels up to 30"

just my .02

hi john cheers for the heads up. i think the length would far out way the gain for the shooting i do.
this fireball will be used to max 200 yards maybe 250 yards on rabbits, crows, pigeons.

so that extra little fps wouldnt be put to good affect

thats good Nigel I guess having the extra bit of power the 17 remington has over the 17 fireball your driving the 25 vmax in the 1 in 10 fast enough to give you the accuracy ;D

dont sell it mate your be gutted if you do. though a 223ai does sound very nice
