.17 question

hello the group
i have a short story which leads into the questions i have.
had a couple of 22's years upgraded to a .222 after i bought a property. last Saturday afternoon
i fired off a couple of shots and noted that these center fires are fair bit louder than .22 rimfires lol anyway the neighbor about a kilometer up the road turned up about 15 mins later talked to mum abit then left by then I'd put the rifle away and was wandering round with a pipe wrench needed to fix a poly fitting. turns out his dog is missing he heard the shots and put 2 + 2 together .
and no i didn't shoot his dog. i think the cattle would most likely trample it if it came onto the property or our dogs would see it off anyway it's one of those small breeds of dog how ever i am now in the market for something smaller and quieter. i am curious about a .17 rifle or wildcat perhaps, not interested in a .22 or .22 magnum or .17 rimfire mostly interested in something i can reload. i plan on mostly hunting bunnies and the odd fox i'd like to use the rabbits in the pot so i guessing head shots only for the rabbits
it should be noted the 2 of my boundaries form part of the dingo fence so there is a chance of the odd feral dog as well but i figure the .222 will do for that. so mostly i am wondering how much quieter a.17 would be in comparison whether the sound is going to carry as far. As the .222 really echoes round here in the valley where i am. thanks for any input

CZ 452 Ultra Lux in .22 LR, (28.6 inch barrel) shoot subsonics, very quiet. You had better hurry though because the 452 is out of production.

.17 hmr are much louder than the .22 LR.

I was just about to make a post wondering what the smallest centerfire .17 was out there. My dad just picked up a .17 HMR and after nailing some critters out to 180 yards i fell in love with it. It really wasnt considerably louder than a .22 LR about 300 yards off my buddy said he could just hear a little snap.

I am also looking for a .17 to reload for but i am not looking for much more than a .17HMR.

These guys do it for a living http://www.saubier.com/
Phil hit the nail on the head. For rimfires I run the .17M2 as ammo costs are 1/3 of the HMR, which my son has. I have shot Woodchucks to 120 yards with it but is a head shot proposition if you want to recover your quarry. It is noticeably louder than .22 LR Match ammo but, as what stated earlier, at distance it is not objectionable. Next I step up to the .17 Ackley Hornet whose performance far outweighs its size. Using the 20 grain V-Max exit wounds are rare on chucks and ricochet concerns almost nonexistent. As far as noise it is certainly greater than the rimfires but significantly less than my .223. I agree with the previous post also that the .17 Fireball with its 70% greater powder consumption is louder than the Ackley Hornet but is still less than my .223. There are smaller .17 center fire however they require even more caseforming and like the AH are not for the novice reloader. The new .17 Hornady Hornet should change all this. I definitely relate with your plight as the urban sprawl here makes caliber choice critical.

All use about 11gr of Powder

17 Mink w/ 20gr Vmax = 3600fps
20 Mink w/ 32gr Vmax = 3400fps
22 Mink w/ 40gr Vmax = 3000fps

All from a 22" barreled, 6lb rifle. Adam

+1 to Mr Majestic about Saubier.com ab bentely is regular on small cal. and hit it on the head w/17 Ack. hornet, A lot of Aus.,NZ and England subscribers on saubier.(rabbit & fox hunters)

With the 17 Hornet (Hornady) you'd have a factory case w/25* shoulder. It's got my interest and I'm not a big 17 (cal)fan (had'em sold'em).

How about a suppressed centerfire caliber?
No BOOM , just the sonic crack of the projectile going thru the air.

I like the way you think and now if you can get PA to legalize them for hunting!

No kidding i was thinking the same thing with every shot i took with the .17 HMR. It would be even better with a .17AH or some sort.

I love Minnesota to death and could think of few other places i would like to live. I was reading an article about suppressors and the author said to the 14 states (or 13 now?) without legal suppressor that we have to "Vote for better politicians." Ha ha that kinda made me laugh as i shook my head.

Adam has some great experience with these small calibers, and the pictures to prove it.............. ;D
