17 Nosler

I was loading some 20 Practical today and it got me to thinking. I have a 17-223 and 17 Remington both in a AR. Has anyone heard of a 17 Nosler built. I like my 22 Nosler, but if it was necked down to a 17 I think it would be a cool round for Prairie dogs and Coyotes.

I think it would be way too much powder. Consider the new .20 Nosler. Their website load data shows top velocity of 4,229 f.p.s. using 33.0 grains CFE223 under a 32 grain bullet. To get roughly 10% more velocity than my .20 Practical, it took roughly 30% more powder (by weight) to do so. Things start getting inefficient and showing that barrels would likely wear out much faster. Now - take that load down to .17 Caliber. Shoot 'em and BBQ them at the same time.

You can only push 17 cal bullet so fast then poof. And yes the Nosler is just too much case for 17 cal.
17-204 would be at high end and does work well with 30 gr. bullets.
17-221 or 17 Mach-4 are at the bottom end in performance.
In middle is 17 Rem and 17 Pred. both works great for what they intended for with 25 gr or 30 gr. bullets.
Bullets hard to come by for others as well.
neck it or a 224 Valkrie down to 20 cal. that should lift your skirt.
