17 mach iv

This always makes me laugh, we drop $$$$ on a rig. Then try to justify it by being economical to shoot.

 I do it myself.

My rifle range is 32 miles from my house one way and the county I hunt in is 85 miles away. I usually drive 200 miles for each Saturday GH hunt. Lots of gas.

I guess it depends on how bad a body wants to shoot.

I won’t even start on how far I will drive to hunt. When I was shooting as much as I liked and wanted to 100-350 round trips two weekends a month were regular occurance. I know that’s not a drop in the bucket to some today.

A lot worse things a guy could be spending his money on than guns and gas.

I have a .17 MkIV but it gets little use because I am usually shooting out much further with larger caliber customs.I have shot a few at 300 yards that showed no sign of being hit for maybe 5 seconds at which time they melted in place, what I call elevator down. Earlier I had a good 6 power on it which was a little limiting. Now it is replaced by a Zeiss 10 power
Diavari. As opportunities for shooting long diminish each year, I expect I will end up where I started MANY a year ago and see how far I can push it.

One of the best crow/chuck bullets ever for that are the old Remington 25gr powerlockt . Got about 500 of those if anybody needs them.

You say you have 500 of the 17 cal Rem 25HP up for sale? I would be interested. I have a Cooper 17M4 that has a diet for the 25HP’s. Twist too slow for the the V-max.

Why the 17 fireball, no recoil, not too loud, accurate , able to see your hits in the scope, and longer barrel life than the the big 17 Rem. In fact, sold my 17 Rem. to my buddy. Most of my shooting is on crows and foxes , a few Coyotes, and the fireball just gets it done with less fuss than other calibers. Sold my 22-250 as it tore apart foxes and blew huge holes in Coyotes. The fireball enters as a pin prick and turns the insides to mush. I have two, one a Rem. stainless fluted barrel, and the other a Cooper varmint extreme with incredible wood. They both shoot under a half inch with 20 grain v-max and H-4198 powder. Love the guns and the caliber.

I saw several articles on this in precision shooting .it saems it will work on chucks up to say 350 to 400 yards in nice weather.my question is are any of you 17 shooters finding this to be a great caliber for say 300 yard or under.and if you shoot to the 350 or 400 yard mark what are you finding out how it preforms.
just asking .

I killed a few at 300 or a little further with the 25 grain. They continued to stand for about 5 seconds after being hit in the chest and then the legs failed and took the down elevator. I didn't get any opps to try it at 400 or so and have many more capable long range choices. It is a really loud mutha for its size.

Hey Gary, 300 for groundhogs works fine. Definitely no exists and major hidden damage, I suspect you could add almost 100 on that for p-dogs.

I left the 17 fireball for the 20 vartarg and glad I did.

I have had 4 of the 17 Mach IV. Some would like H335 while others liked H322...go figure? Shilen barrels on all of mine, I turned the necks on all of them.

I only shot 25g Berger Target bullets.

We killed a lot of coyotes with the round, but there is no forgiveness if and when you hit behind the diaphram, otherwise, they are DRT.

The round is very effective on p. dogs to 350-400 in calmish conditions. No recoil is instant pleasure.

I found that the accuracy was with the Berger 25's barely kissing the lands, CCI BR4 primers, helped, and all we had was Rem 221 FB brass to work with.

Neck turning does away with a double butt load of flyers in the 17's, and I can not stress this enough.
