17 Hornady Hornet on Rem 700 SA?

I'm in on this. I believe it's not possible but will wait for the experts to chime in.

Oh the 17 Hornet is an awesome round.

Not (reasonably) possible. The 700 Hase problems with the .17 FireBall, and the .221 Fireball... the case is so short. They had to modify the bolt extractor angle. That is as small as anyone who is sane, would go - the hornet is much smaller.

Anybody built a 17 Hornady Hornet on a Rem 700 SA?

If so, any issues and who did the gunsmithing?

I have a Cooper M38 .22 Hornet, a Cooper M21 17 Remington, both Montana Varminter. Previous to that, I was shooting a 17 Fireball out of a Remington 700 SPS Varmint that I put into a an HS Precision stock, making it basically a look alike to the old Remington 700 VS. After handling both Coopers for a while, then going back to the SA Remington, it felt like a very huge action for even the Fireball. The Remington is a lot bulkier, so I am looking at more than just length. Keep that in mind if you can find a way to get it done.

As a single shot it would be easy. Getting one to feed would be a custom center feed magazine proposition and even then who knows. If you've got the money someone has the time but you'd better want it really bad.

I understand the feeding issues since I also have a 20 Vartarg on Rem 700 SA. I would only do this as a single shot and wondering if it will work or not. Also interested in finding anybody who has already done it.

I did a 17hmr on a savage pta one time. That was fun! Used it as a trainer. It was not easy and was alot of trial and error. Im also a long time machinist which helps. So anythings possible but if you cant do it yourself I wouldnt bother honestly.

Bad idea. Oh it could be done, a lot of things can be done. Doesn't mean it's a good idea or that it would work worth a crap.

Best bet, find a rifle that is built for the .17 Hornet in the first place.

It ejects just fine. I wish the bolt was a coned nose. Somewhere I saw a video of an xp-100 with a coned nose feeding .17 Mink's into the chamber slick as snot. A loaded round in mine needs to have the tip of the bullet in the chamber before trying to close the bolt otherwise it hits the back of the tennon. If I was going to do it again I'd have a coned bolt.

I've had a Rem700 SA 17 FB for years and have had no problems at all. I would not hesitate to build a 17 HH on a Rem7 but the 700 SA is a little big. I'm contemplating one and I think I am going the CZ 527 Varmint route.

The 17 Hornet is my absolute favorite caliber to shoot. I have a CZ 527 Varmint and it's one gun that will NEVER leave my stable. The other gun that will NEVER leave my stable is my Savage in 20 Practical. :)

I'm not sure why you would want to go through the trouble and expense to do so. Here's five shots from my CZ 527 varmint using 20 gr hornady superformance ammo at 100 yards.
