17 HMR

Several months ago, I was at the range and met another shooter with an Anschutz A17 (17HMR). Long story short, he didn’t want to sell it, but I did get to shoot it. I couldn’t get it out of my mind and so I started a search for one. Most of the ones I came across were in the $900 range (+- $100).

I decided to take my CZ 455 17 HMR and convert it to what I wanted. The barrel was shortened to 18” and threaded for the suppressor. It has an overall length of 26 5/16”. I bought an MDT LSS RF stock for it along with a set of MDT vertical grips. The grips have a little bit of adjustment forward and back. With this grip, it allows me to move it to the rear position and that’s just right for the ball of my finger to touch the trigger. I put a Timney trigger on it several years ago with around a 2 lb pull weight. It’s also wearing a Nikon Black X-1000 scope.

Headed to the range this morning and had to re-sight it in. After shortening the barrel, new stock, etc., it was way off. Of course after it was sighted in, a cross wind picked up to about 15 mph.. I shot the Hornady 17 gr Vmax and the CCI 17 gr Vmax at 100 yards. The CCI came out the winner. The Hornady was okay, but the CCI was noticeably better on the grouping.

I plan on using this SP for a lot of practice, saving ammo and barrel wear on the 20 VT and 223. It will also be used for drive-bys on PD. Since I started walking the PD fields now, I’ll use this for the closer in shots. I have a good rotating bench, but when walking I use a tripod. Since it’s sighted in now, all my practice shooting will be off the tripod.

Effective range might surprise you. This year I shot a prairie dog at 283 yards with mine. As others told me, once it drops below sonic the effect is much less dramatic. The 17 HMR is all I have used the past 2 seasons. Here is what I shot in 10 days this year (right at 2,000 rounds).
