17 HMR

What kind of groups at 100 yds
is acceptable or average.
I have a new Savage and am wondering if I am expecting to much.

Wow great info. I just havent played with my Savage 17 enough yet. I do know my Savage 22mag will shoot like a benchrest gun at 100 but u must feed her what she craves. Hint gold tips

You should be able to get MOA or better. Pick the right bullet for your gun.

Both of the Savage 93's I set up liked it when I bedded the actions. A little stroking with JB seams to help before you take them out the first time. If it is a plastic stocked gun it will be harder to get it to shoot well on a regular basis. I could never get rid of the fliers with the plastic stock.

Most Savages in 17hmr shoot good. A few don't and never will. I've broken in and set up four. Three were 1" at 100, one was subpar. For best results, they have a one brand/weight/bullet style preference. Better to determine how it shoots if the wind is 5mph or less.

I use a CZ in 17HMR and that's pretty ammo fussy with quite a large variation between what it likes and what it does not. Hornady 17grain is about as bad as it gets, along with Federal 17grain, and is lucky to get inside 1 1/4 at 50 yards... However, 17grain CCI HP is fairly good at around 1/2 this size (0.6 - 0.7 inches at 50 yards) and the 20grain better than that (~0.4 inches over ten shots at 50yards). Note that Hornady 20grain is a tad worse at 0.7 inches at the same range.
This was after a lot of mucking about floating the rifle and bedding it (properly) and shot of a bench and sandbags.

The CCI 20grain has a fair degree of spread on the muzzle velocity (~100fps peak) for a 2200fps nominal.

My CZ 453 Varminter does around .80 aat 100 yards. .338 to .676 at 50 yards. I have never found a no wind day. Best ammo for me so far is Hornady 17 grain V-MAX. Not a big difference in ammo. I think it is all manufactured by CCI.

My Sako Quad likes all 17 HMR ammo. Some better than others.
It's worst groups run about 3/4 MOA.
And on a good day , with no wind,,and steady bench it'll shoot in the .4's at 100.
And no it's not for sale.

You may get some good tips over on Rimfire Central, rfc.com. There are guys over there that shoot in the .2s @ 100 yds with their 17 rimfires. ::)

My 93 shoots a hole at 50yds,but at a hundred it looks more like buckshot.A real let down, however if light wind effects these little pills that bad the rifle isnt worth it.

haha...mine is the same way..one ragged hole with winchester supremes at 50..but at one hundred a shotgun could pattern better...i keep my shots under 75yrds with this gun and go for the 223 past that

One note on my CZ is that it's chopped to 16 inches and has a light barrel plus (for the UK) a suppressor. I wish it were a Varminter but sadly not. It ONLY shoots well with the suppressor and without it's like, as some of you guys put it, as bad as buckshot at any range.

jon & fred, you got two bad ones. I'd send them back.
I have a 452 CZ that shoots great at 50 yards but groups open up significantly at 100 yards so I guess I had better box it up and send it back mine must be a bad one also.

Either that or try a different triggerman. ;D I have four CZs, four Annies, two savages and they all shoot one inch or less at 100 yds. I weigh & segregate my ammo. That helps.

I am left handed so i went with a CZ 452. I floated the barrel and bed the action and installed a trigger. After lapping the rings i used an old Leupold 6 x 42, and with cci 17's it shot in an 3/4 at 100 and with Federal 17gr.it shot 5 in .502 and hole at 50yds..I never tried anything else, shot it again to see if the first time was a fluke but it pounded them again. Now it's clean and waiting for it's first victim....... jim

hogpatrol,
You actually have 10 guns in 17HMR? Wow if I could be so lucky and all shoot like that, wow very impressive and what a shooter you must be, wish I were as good as you. ;D

1000 rds a week & you just might get there. :)

Despite the pigfarmers, excuse me,Hogpatrol has to say,I quit. I was about to spend another $100 on a rifle basix for my 77-17 but the effort is not worth it. I want to know that when I squeeze @ 100yds a head shot is happening to my local squirrels. The Savage and Ruger are going on the block with less than 50 rounds each. The 22lr or 22mag are predictable and certain. I still love most of my Rugers and Savages but the 17hmr sadly is not worth it.
