17 HMR cleaning rod recommendations

As the title states im looking for recommendations on a good cleaning rod for 17hmr, its a savage bolt gun if that makes a difference. I do have an outers but it does not reach all the way thru the action and barrel completely to drop a patch or unscrew an brush.

ProShot for bare stainless steel, Tipton for coated are what I use. But jag selection and patch size and thickness are critical to cleaning rod life. These are flexible small rods and you need to use them with care.

Might be the Lilja barrel on my CZ, but it never collects any copper and very little fouling.

I needed one and didn't have time to wait for an online order so I went to Sportman's Warehouse and picked up a Montana Extreme rod. I normally use Boretech rods but the rod from Montana Extreme is very nice.

If you aren't in a hurry, Amazon has them. It ticks a lot of boxes.

My .17 Cal cleaning rod is a Gunslick one piece carbon fiber cleaning rod that I've had and used for over fifteen years. It gets the job done but I'm always a little nervous it could break and shish kabob me when I'm using it. I always use a good fitting bore guide on all of my rifles but I think it's even more important to use one with the 17 cals because that tiny little rod bows sooooo much. I don't know about the other steel 17 cal cleaning rods but there is no way I'd use a carbon fiber rod without a good fitting bore guide.

Even though my Gunslick CF 17 cal rod has worked for me, I would not recommend it to anyone and I would not buy one again I'd probably get something like the Montana X-Treme or Bore Tech.

You have a Lilja barrel on a rimfire rifle...?

Absolutely.

This isn't about bashing CZ, but I bought a new CZ 455 to use on prairie dogs. I took it out and it shot patterns, not groups. It just wasn't going to work for my use. So I ordered a Lilja drop in barrel and the only thing I changed was the barrel (nothing else). Here was the first 5 shot group at 100m (so it would be 10% smaller at 100 yards). The rifle is deadly on pd's to 200+ yards. To date my furthest kill is 238 yards, and the only reason it isn't further, is I haven't shot at any further than that.

I have a Lilia barrel on my 10/22 and it shoots extremely well. With RWS R-50 it is very close
to my BR ULA actioned rifle.
Forgot to mention that I use a brass 1 piece 17 cal rod made by Sam Rolley in PA and an
original 3 piece rod that came with my H&R model 317 in 17 Remington.

My dad put a Lilja 17 HMR drop in barrel on his Ruger 77 many years ago and he's been very happy with it.

Montana X-treme cleaning rods is all I use. They offer so many different caliber sizes and lengths. Their quality is top of the line.

I have used - and broken - a number of .17 cal rods. I settled on using Tipton and Montana Extreme, the latter being the much better rod - as a much higher price. You can get one that is plenty long too. Order an extra jag at the same time. You will be glad you did.

I use Dewey coated for all my centerfires, but was happiest with Tipton carbon fiber for the 17HMR and 17WSM. Now I only use a bore snake. Seems to do an equally good job since neither of these leave any copper.

I have no problem cleaning .17 bores with a Dewey .17 rod using the proper bore guide and patch size. First patch I trim down and saturate well before going to a very saturated bronze brush and regular sized patches. If I had to buy another rod it would be a Pro-shot uncoated- I believe they are an improvement over Dewey. I'd leave my bore uncleaned if I had to resort to ropes or carbon fiber rods.
