Four you guys killing up to coyote size game with either the .17hmr or .17wsm ( only these two not to be rude but not asking about anything else) what are you guys doing for ammo and what are your general shot placements ?
Thanks

My gunsmith had dropped a few coyotes with a 17hmr. I might be wrong but i think a 20gr bullet. They have a coyote on the lable. CCI i think. Dont know his shot placement. Brother in law has same ammo just has not had the opertunity to try them out

Just shot 1 with the 17 gr Vmax in 17 HMR. Shot him behind the shoulder, expected him to run off. He dropped on the spot. After about a minute he stood back up, and I let him have it again behind the shoulder a 2'nd time. Spun and bit at the entrance, down and out.

I ran a 17hmr on half a dozen or so coyotes over 10yrs ago. It is not a huge sample and over a decade ago so not sure how much help I am.

I ran the Hornady 20gr XTP. All coyotes were shot broadside / double lung right behind the front shoulder. All shots under 100y and must under 75yd if memory serves me right. Every coyote ran quite a ways (~50-200y). Everyone one needed to be trailed up, usually with my decoy dogs. I'm glad the Savage rifle was light...as I had to physically run a couple coyotes down. On a positive note it was fur friendly and I got some running in. If I had to do it again I would probably start with the 20gr XTP, I would only take broadside shots, and I would have dog dogs on stand.

I think it would a dandy cartridge for bobcats called at night.

Hope this helps some. Again this was quite awhile ago and not a ton of coyotes for sample.

Would not use a hmr on coyotes, way too underpowered, 17wsm proper shot placement 125 yards max, 150 , 200 if you can hit the head, most can't.

I have used the 17 HMR on several coyotes, called in or spot with in 150 yrds and hitting them in the chest/lung or head area using the 15.5 NTX bullet. That is all I have shot them with since my state requires lead free bullets on game or non-game listed animals now.
Its has done a good job for me, when I use the HMR on a hunt.

No personal coyote experience with the HMR, but I can say with meager authority that if head shots are used, the little round is good for rock chucks out to 200 yards. I only take head shots on chucks with this round, much preferring my 20VT or 221FB, but it works if one is careful about shot placement.

My Anschutz 1715 HMR and some local chucks.

I would imagine if hit in the noggin with a 20gr bullet from an HMR, the dog would be, well....dead.

These were shot with 17 HMR. About 75 yards. I wouldn’t shoot a coyote with 17 past 75 yards. 223 or one of the more popular chambering.

I have shot piles of jack rabbit with hmr and 15.5 gr ntx, 17 vmax, 17 tnt. One time i put like a half dozen ntx in a big jack at 10 yards and they must have penciled through. It just cried louder every time i shot it. I ended up breaking its neck. Weird thing is I took some at longer distance and it worked fine. If I was going for coyote I would use the xtp. The wsm would certainly be a better choice. I also shoot a 17 Hornet. It sure hits harder than the hmr and drops big jacks with marginal hits. I would think the wsm wouldn't be too far behind.

If you have both rifles, I'd leave the HMR at home and use the heaviest WSM bullet available to you. I'd go head shot if I could - otherwise heart/lungs. I've shot and seen shot a number of coyotes with the HMR. It will definitely kill them - even with the 15.5 NTX, but the WSM will put them down with considerably more authority. I laughed at RabbitSlayers post above - as I had the same encounter with a big jack rabbit using an HMR, took a couple of rounds to knock him down - but still wasn't dead. I stomped on his head.
