17 Fireball

Can anyone tell me what the diameter of there expander ball is ? I have a new set of redding dies and they measure .171
diameter on the expander ball, with this being that size I am getting a crease mark on the bullets when I seat them , It seems they are very tight going into the case mouth, like the expander is too small . I'm using new rem brass cut and sized all the same and the case mouth chamfered inside and out, and shooting Berger 25 gr. flat base hp bullets . Any ideas would be appreciated.

There may be a burr on the seating stem that won't allow it to make contact with the ogive. I've had to use a small stone to smooth the edges on more than a few.

I measured the two that I have and both of them are .170 for what it's worth......

Phil.

ok thxs guys, I guess I will give redding a call to see if I can buy another seater stem, maybe that's the problem , could be too sharp of angle or it wasn't cut right from the start . I will see if it is the same contact point as my hornady measuring tool.

Have u tried annealing the necks sound like its the necks too hard or the wrong size exspander some times a compressed load will do the same, that's my experience any way.

Stacy, would new brass be too hard for the .17 fireball , never loaded .17 fireball before ? It just seems kinda tight for such a small caliber to me when seating. Expander measures .171 , seater looks to be the right taper too. I just don't know..... thanks. Shooting 17.3 gr of H4198 behind a 25 gr berger ...not a compressed load

Have you tried to run a neck expander mandrel through the necks before loading???

Crooked or dinged necks....I`m guessing your using Rem. brass.....

I expand and turn all my brass, so I haven`t ran into this YET.....

Phil Do you know what your diameter of the expander mandrel is ? .173 or .174 diameter. That's gonna be my next purchase.

This may sound funny, but take out the stem, degrease. then put a dab of hot glue in it, press a bullet in straight (via press) and you have created a custom seat stem. Want it out? heat it up, and out it drips.

And no funny crease. Likely the neck tension is high, the wall thickness of bullet may not be holding up to strain.

You probably own a factory Remington .17 Fireball. Once you replace the barrels, the finicky goes away. BTDT, twice.
