I have a 17-222 that was put together sometime in the 60s. the twist rate is 1-71/4. Shoots OK with 30gr bullets,but was really made for 37gr, bullets. Does anyone know where I can get 37gr. bullets? The heaviest I can find is 30gr. Started with 25gr. bullets and the heavier the bullet the better it shoots. I hope somebody has some idea where I can find heavier bullets.

Interesting, have owned about every 17 in over 30 years. Could be that twist was built for the Barnes solid copper bullets back then? Dick Saunders the 17 Guru that led the pack and A good friend shot them at 4500FPS using a 17 Saunders Jet ( 22 Jet necked down, annealed and blown out) the only bullet that would hold together at that speed.
In a single shot Ruger or T/C that is quite the round, had two different ones built, the cases lasted forever. Just thought I'd share it with you. Pete

HI Longbow, Thanks for the added info. I find it very interesting to hear how things were done before all the new technology was available. I found 37gr heads. I will post the outcome later. I don't think I will be any where near 4500fps. Thanks again.

Pete. Back when the 36 gr first came out from Todd. I sat down and figured velocity, etc to a 30 gr. Berger at 300 yds.( cost new barrel,efficiency, etc)
I saw no reason to go over a 30 gr for that caliber. I had one custom 15# 17 Rem with Lilja 10t that did unbelievable groups at 300/400 yds.
The MK-4 Sako my walking gun is perfect for everything , capacity, velocity for A 25gr pill. Shoots the 30's if you need them.
The 17 Hornet worked great for around out buildings and closeup with A good load not to hot, and my quiet Pooper loads to 100+ yds .
As I have stated before the 17 Saunders Jet will do anything a 17 Rem will do and beyond because that case is so bombproof. My own feelings the 17 PPC, 17-204 , etc is a waste of powder down the bore. Pete
