17-222 Mag AI

This round would give you little to nothing over the 17 Rem. With a given bullet weight in a given caliber you get an increase in velocity equal to 1/2 of the increase in case volume. If you increase the case volume by 5% your velocity increase would be 2 1/2%. That rule of thumb fails as your cases get larger though, and your gain in velocity gets less. Of the 17`s my favorite is the 17 AH, now the 17 Hornet in a factory round. At present I also have a 17 Mach lV, now the 17 fireball in a factory round. I have also had a 17-223 and a 17 Rem. The 17-223 is just under the 17 Rem., not worth messing with. The Fireball is a very efficient round, but performance with a factory round is hands down the 17 Rem. If I were going to build a 17 wildcat it would be on the BR case or the 22-250 case. These are both over the point where you losing efficiency, but with a fast twist and heavy bullets should make a great long range varmint round, as long as your not to worried about barrel life.

I think it would sure make an awesome looking cartridge.I shoot coyotes with the 17 Predator,it is basically the Calhoon 19-223 necked down to 17.
30 grain bullets at 4100fps with X-Terminator.The 17-204 might be easier for you to achieve similar results, but with a 30 degree shoulder, lots of brass and
die options. If you really want that 40 degree shoulder and that bit of extra speed go for it.I guess it depends what you want to achieve.Nothing wrong with the 17Rem,like Catfish said.Especially if it's a nice custom chamber shooting 30's.

Has anyone ever heard of or done this? If so, how did it work out?
I have one on a small Sako action. Very accurate, no problem running a 25 gr. bullet 3900. 4100 will blow primers more often than comfortable.
It is not AI still awsome on small deer, hogs, turkeys and crows.

Disagree.
The difference the larger .17 cal hotrods offer over a standard .17Rem with (heavy for cal.) 30gr bullets is readily apparent. 250+ fps gain is nuthin' to shake a stick at & turns a 30gr bullet into one bad lil' mama-jama. A 30 gr in the 3800 fps range is just 'ho-hum' from a .17Rem, but spool one up the 4100 fps range & it makes for pixie dust sprinkles. :) That initial start speed increase pays on the big end, and makes for a legit coyote thumper...

I'd sooner recommend a .17-204, as well. One, for the sake of component availability. Two, it's got enough capacity to push a 30gr bullet to the point of diminishing performance returns (~4200 fps, give or take) Anything larger, and you're burnin' powder just to blow yer bullets up, prematurely...

Love my .17 Predator!

What twist would you use for a 30 grain .17 in the .204 case? I need to see what twist is on my MachIV .17. If it would work, it would be fairly inexpensive to move up.
